Getting an i9300 Replacement

Okay, so after multiple part replacements and Dell sending the wrong screen, I was authorized to get a replacement on Monday. Currently, my specs are as follows: Pentium M 770 (2.13 GHz), 2 GB ram, 100 GB Hard drive, Nvidia GeForce Go 6800 (256 MB). What will I likely get and when/where should I see my replacement specs?

you will most likely be getting the studio 17.. IMO. not sure if they have 1720s lying around... off chance an xps, but highly unlikely. havent been seeing that happen too often anymore.

Hm... it appears that I'll be getting an Inspiron 9400 with a core 2 duo and a 7900 GS/GTX...
EDIT: Who should I contact if they dispatched the wrong thing? They want to send out XP Pro, and due to the fact that I may want to make this a media center PC some day, and my current i9300 has MCE on it. I talked to a tech and she said that techs have no power over replacements after they are issued. I emailed customer service, but I'm not sure if that will do any good.

If you have the MCE disks from your 9300, you can install it on the 9400. The unit is MCE compatible.

The 9400 is a refurb, so make sure you check it out carefully, and if you can extend the warranty on it. those 79xx cards are not cheap these days.

I know that it is MCE compatible, but if I used the disks and the serial from my current i9300, it would be technically piracy... (I actually don't mind piracy, although OSs are the one thing I do not like to pirate)
I already have a warranty valid through late 2010 and dell has told me that my warranty will carry over.
How are the 79xx cards by the way? I know that they will be better than my 6800 go, but how do they perform otherwise?
The Dell OS reinstall disks will work and validate on any Dell computer, really you do not even need the Key from the 9300.

Personally I found that the MCE edition was lacking some core XP features, and XP Pro a better choice anyways.

As far as the 79xx cards, they seem to fail alot, IMO the biggest problem is Heat, the fans need to be cleaned often to keep the temps down, or you end up with a BSOD.

Peformance wise the 7900 card was a great performer, but of course it is not in the same league as a newer G92 series card. but a definite improvement over your 9300 laptop.

Just keep your warranty upto date as long as possible, it will be cheaper getting a warranty than getting a new video card.

make sure it is in decent condition, and if it is screwy, make dell give you a better one. i had my m1710 replaced with a m1710, it was completely thrashed

Holy hell woodstock, that looks like crap. I made sure to check it out once I got it, and it was clean.
Although, it seems that Doughey's comment was correct: my video card died about 5 days after I received it, and unfortunately for me, the 7900GSs are in "back order"...

it is sad. the gpu's are awesome from a performance standpoint, just the longevity is lacking.

that's the trade off you need to be willing to make, and although it is frustrating sometimes, i find keeping my warranty current and knowing what to to do when you need to get your gpu replaced makes things livable personally. i like to be able to play the latest games on my laptop, not my desktop, so i just suck it up for the most part, but i like to complain and share my experiences here

Indeed, I'll trade longevity for performance, unless longevity turns out to be 5 days every time...
I didn't think that they made the 7900GSs anymore, so I'm kinda confused as to exactly how it is on back order, seems to be one of those things you either have or don't have.

Ok, I am stupified by dells take on replacement computers. Please help a novice in computer world.

So my i3900 with the 6800 upgrade ate some driveway about a month ago. Dell has sent me a M1720 and the video card is a 8600M GT. The performance is terrible. I ran the PassMark version 7 and consistently get a around a 600 score. My wifes studio gets 800 and it is a POS.

Is there a way to argue dell into a lappy capable of upgrades to the video card.

I will admit the CPU went from 1.86 to 2.5, but it is complete washed out by the video card.

What is my best case scenario or goal?

Many thank yous....

XpsWannaBe

PS The replacement lappy needs hinges, DVD player, bezel and base due to just being in terrible shape. Why did they ship it in such poopy condition? Do they have quality control?

Persistance is the key,, your going to have to keep at them

And memtion the physical condition of the replacement as well.

You can ask to escalate the issue as well
post #14 of 26
the quality control is terrible, just awful..

you can argue. i think your gpu had a 256 bit bus, and your 8600 has a 128 bit bus, so it is a downgrade. doesn't matter about any other component, it has to be the same or better, every component. they will try to tell you the things they upgraded make it a better deal for you, but you just need to constantly complain. for months. it is very time consuming and stressful, but if you stick with it they might replace that computer to something better (better gpu anyways)

took me a month and constant emails to get my 8700 replaced with 8800's, i almost gave up

And yet others hsave had full blown M1730 laptops given to them with out a bit of hassel waht so ever....Go figure

Ok, Ahmed from Dell just called and they are willing to take this 1720 back and give me a 9400 with a 7900 GS.

To me that seems like the way to go, but if I can swing the 1730 I am willing to wine until the cows come home.

Will Notebook form let me change my name to XPS_MAN!!!!

Also why am I in debt for credits?

It is killing my FICO...
take the 9400, dont argue with them about that, it is a better machine so you have nothing to complain about

but, i can almost guerentee it is going to be completely thrashed! it is what? 2 years from being in production. it is going to be in the same shap as the 1710 i got

they might be quicker to give you that xps when the 9400 is a pos and you call them up about it.

like i tell everyone, it is a game, a pain in the ass game. they offer you something that is below what you already got (accept the gpu) to see if you are trying to get that free upgrade.

dell is pretty good at swapping out crap they send you, but they will try to fix the the replacement first. i just refuse that option. getting a replacement that needs to be repaired is wrong. i just kept complaining until l got a brand new machine...
That is exactly right!!!

They keep wanting to repair everything. I keep saying why did you send me a POS? Their answer is let us fix it.

That is the most frustrating piece.
