Can I upgrade the CPU of an MT6831?

Hi. My Gateway laptop model MT6831 came with a Core 2 Duo T5300 processor. (1.73 GHz and 533 MHz FSB) This laptop also has and Intel 945GM chipset. I'd really like to get this thing into the 2-2.5 GHz range.

Does anyone know of a faster processor that will work in this computer? If so, which one?

Tigerdirect.com sold me a quadcore that didn't fit, and the Gateway goons won't talk to me because it's out of warranty.

Is there anything I can do to speed up this pig? I'm trying to do some pro-audio work on it.

Any bit of info will be appreciated immensely.

Thanks a lot,
Derek

T7400 or T7600 should work for you.

. Gateway post sales support:

Must be a mis-understanding dingy. You should still be able to call for support, but with pay-per-call (?)

. Speeding it your comp:

A faster drive, maxing out ram, clean up working environment (disabling unneeded startup processes and services, review AV and Firewall settings)

I agree, doing all of the above will probably give you a faster machine than a 400mhz increase in processor power.

Ok cool. I looked up the T7400 and T7600. It says the T7400 is a socket 478 and the T7600 is a socket Micro-FCPGA.

I downloaded CPU-Z and it tells me my CPU is a socket 479mPGA. Does that mean these are non-compatible?

I believe the speed on my drive is 5400. Can I just upgrade to a 7200 without a problem?

You guys are great.

Thanks again,
Derek

. All the hibbity hoobla aside, Intel GMA950 will support the T7600 with no issue.

. 5400 to 7200 = cool!

Thanks! After checking your links and couple other forums, it looks like an 479MPGA socket laptop will take a 478 socket CPU such as the T7400. Though I'm not sure it will take the T7600 because it's an FCPGA socket. The pins on an FCPGA are longer and thicker (slightly) than an MPGA-2 socket. According to my CPU-Z program, I have an MPGA socket and not an MPGA-2, though for all I know they could be the same thing.

The Seagate hard drives at TigerDirect are cheap ($50-$80). Now this is where I really expose my ignorance. If I replace the hard drive, do I have to first save all my documents, pictures, etc. to another drive? Will I have to reinstall all my programs? I only ask because it was a REAL bitch getting all my audio plugins to load properly with my Cubase audio software. (correct folders, etc.)

Clone it - Acronis True Image. Then just swap out the old drive with the larger new one. Zero pain.
