i have a acer aspire 5920, when ever the battery is taken out the q w a s z x esc tab cap lock shift ctrl fn 1 and 2 keys stops working. this is the third time it has happened and the first time i fixed it by a hard reset. the last time i don't know how i got it working, somthing stuffed up on start up and it came up with a error when bios was loading, it told me to press f2 but that key didn't work. after about ten resets it worked. but now i can't get the keys working. does any one have any ideas about what it could be. i have tryed every thing i can think of. please can you help.

. Reseat your ram modules? Your hard drive?

. run chkdsk on your hard drive?

I did that but it still does not work. thanks for your help

I recommend a re-installation of the OS. BSOD at Windows start up is usually a driver issue.

The keyboard, have you tried to reseat it as well? But the combination of removing the battery causing the keyboard to malfunction can also point to a failing system board.

a bit hard but.

turn off, remove battery, remove AC.

turn over, remove thermal door.

with battery bay to you, look in the upper right corner of the opening. You should see an unused minicard connector. right behind it is a 2pin, black and red, twisted cable. use some tweezers to gently pull up on the cable. This cable is the CMOS battery cable. once removed, let unit sit for about 3 minutes. plug cable back in and power unit up.

is your keyboard working? if so, update your bios to 3813.

i finally got it working after removing the CMOS battery cable, it took me a while to find it. so do you think that it could be the system board starting to fail? because the computer is not even a year old.
thank you for your help, way more helpful than other forums.

@pedro6:
- cool to hear that it works out.

@MichelleG:
- is this procedure pretty much standard on Acers having keyboard issues? This is the 2nd time that your (this) recommendation and tips work wonderfully.

- can we use this procedure for other brands/models, for this type of keyboard/battery issue?

cheers ...

@pedro6
nah, system board should be fine, just make sure you update the bios.

@qhn
well that procedure is for the 5920's. I have seen battery issues cause keyboard problems on acers, gateways, and sony's so it could be an issue with most brands. would make sense being that most manufacturers use the same ODM's such as quanta, inventec, foxconn, arima, etc.

Brilliant. I would definitively add this to my learning and possible solution, when such problem occurs; at least as part of recommendation.

Much appreciation

cheers ...

Once I'd sussed what the thermal door was....doh, MichelleG's fix worked a treat, and much better than my puny 21:00-04:15 efforts, 5 minutes and done! the keyboard is working again... now just need to work out what the bios is and how to change it....doh.... again.

Thanks so much PC advisor is history!

Many thanks

my laptop battery died again, and the keyboard stuffed up the same way as last time. but the taking the cmos battery cord out doesn't fix it. please help the on screen keyboard sucks.

Same problem

I'm having the same problem. I left the CMOS battery cable disconnected for at least 5 minutes, and I can tell it did reset, since there was no password for BIOS settings (got there with external keyboard). So I went ahead and updated the BIOS, but the problem remains. Do you have any other advice? Apparently this machine is about 4 months out of warranty. Thanks.

could be a bad mainboard or bad main battery. try it with no battery installed.

I've got an acer aspire 3000,only way I can get it to work right is to remove the battery.If not upon boot,it goes into windows,and locks up.Acer's aware of the problem,and aparently there's no fix.Your's and everyone else's best bet,is to go to ftc.gov,federal trade commission,click on consumer protection button,and file a complaint.They won't resolve individual complaints,but if enough of us file complaints,they'll investigate it,and force acer to recall this junk.I've gone around,and around with acer for 3 years,laptop started screwing up 1 month after warrantee ran out.Believe me I've told them about all the people having these problems.Their ignoring it,and making a fortune off people paying them to fix their junk.Probably not what you wanted to hear,but it's the truth.There's a 100+ sites with 20-30 people on those sites with aspire 3000,and 5000 series with identical problems,and that's just those I found,before I quit looking for a fix for mine.One guy on here says he's had his back to acer 3x's,and going back again,they replaced motherboard,hard drive etc..

Please don't hijack this thread about 5920's to discuss your problems with an aspire3000

We do have threads with AS3000 with keyboard and touchpad lock up issues. The cause is a bad battery. The resolution is to get a new battery, remove the battery or simply disable the battery in device manager.

Please search in the future rather than rant about something with clearly incorrect information.
