I know, I know . . . waiting will be the hardest part of the process, as I want it NOW!

I noticed you have the Blu-ray drive and Vista Ultimate. Since I opted not to get Blu-Ray or the TV tuner; my plan was to not pay the extra $ for ultimate and upgrade to Windows 7 once it arrives. What are your thoughts on this plan?

Sounds good to me. I went for ultimate because I wanted to check it out. I have only used home premium up until now. I'll probably move to Windows 7 eventually, but I want to wait for some user reviews on the finished product.

The initial reviews I've read said that Windows 7 is a FASTER Vista that uses less system resources and/or will use them more efficiently. So, it could be thought of as Vista SP3; except that we have to pay for it.

"End of May," was all they would tell me too.

That seems like an eternity. ...Good things come to those who wait!!!

I can't wait to see your systems!

I was sooo close to buying the 5797, but I think I'm going to have to buy this thing. I'm going to try to wait until they start shipping - maybe between now and then Intel will announce the release of the Calpella chipset, although I've heard they've delayed the release until August-October.

Do you guys have any thoughts on this rig, with the desktop processor/chipset, vs the Clarksfield/Calpella rigs that will arrive some time in 2009? Do desktop components handle the added stress of life in a notebook chassis as well as dedicated notebook components? Will the eventual Calpella/Clarksfield Sager rigs equal the 9280, or will they take a performance hit in exchange for better temp and battery management?

Man this is going to be a sweet rig...

achille's heel

The Sager NP9280 is an awesome laptop
the only bad thing about is the weak GPU
The GTX 280M is not anywhere as good as its desktop GTX 280. Not sure why they didn't license the 4870 x2 mobility

If you decide to grab this thing. go for the:
Intel i7 940 2.93ghz. 920 is nice but OC on a laptop is not a good idea so 3ghz is a nice standard.
6gb DDR3 ram
2x320gb 7,200rpm raid 0 for speed

GTX 280M

i saw a bench of the GTX 280M and i am not impressed at all.
GTX 280M is only 1/2 as good as the 4870 x2 in the Asus W90 and the Asus cost $2400 but then again, the asus does not have an i7 cpu

therefore, the sager is a weak gaming laptop? will there be dual gtx 280m sli soon?

FYI: I emailed XoticPC and this was the response regarding the above quote:

No laptop GPU is ever going to be as strong as its Desktop counterpart. When we tested the W90 with the 4870x2 vs. the GTX280 in the 9280 ...the crisis benchmark had the GTX280 beating the 4870's by almost 10fps.

Even though something is better on paper, which the 4870's are, doesn’t mean that it is the same in the real world. Even though the 4870's might beat a single GTX280 in a benchmark, testing on the actual application (video games) shows the GTX280 coming out ahead.

Nvidia has consistently come out with good software for their graphics cards. Driver 185.81 just came out and on my GTX280 at home it increased my fps by around 10-30% depending on the game. I get to test out every graphics card on the market and I personally choose Nvidia.

There is one already out(pre order)with GTX 280 SLI...Kobalt computers comanche SLI on Clevo m980nu(clevo Mobo)...but dont have the I7 cpu's only duo Extremes,,,Quad Extremes, Both still are very good cpu's)...Still there will be nothing to touch it in performance for some time to come...

The list of notebooks known to carry each card along with reviews of the units they are used in, has been a huge time saver in determining which models offer "X" video card. Most thorough assemblage of mobile graphics cards, test scores, and notebooks I've found so far.

Here is something that will help you out with the Cpu's selection also...http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

Wow, thanks much Bullet.

Overall they mostly break down as expected, but there are some surprises on that list... The difference in performance between some of the processors I'm considering purchasing and what I now have is not as great as I thought or hoped. Plenty of food for thought from that list.

Also, it is interesting how the break down of video cards on that sight differs from the results on Notebookcheck, though the former only measures Passmark Scores. Great site.
