Long wait times on start-up

I am not sure how much info to put here but the basic problem is really long start up wait times. Immediately after turning the computer on there is a two minute pause. The pause is just after acknowledging the processor and before counting the memory. After the two minute pause it goes on as normal until after checking for a boot from the CD-Rom. Presumably after that it boots from the hard drive and then there is a blank screen and a ten minute pause. After the ten minute pause the Windows (Vista BTW) progress bar comes up for a few seconds and then another blank screen for two minutes. After that the Windows load screen accompanied by the windows start sound and everything is normal from there.

I can get the computer on but this is driving me crazy! I have tried setting BIOS settings to default. I have tried unplugging the network hookup(don't know why just thought maybe).

I am sure I have left needed information out but just ask and I'll give anything I may have left. The system BTW is the one listed in my SIG.

Thanks for any help anyone can give

have you checked to see if there's a BIOS update?

Have you tried the option "Quick Start" in the BIOS, and also set the hard drive as first boot?

How many ram modules do you have? Tried removing one or 2 out?

cheers ...

Thanks for all the input guys! I just finished trying everything out one at a time and no luck.

1st updated the BIOS, there was an update and seems to be no new issues but no fix(also cleared CMOS)

2nd checked in BIOS and found "Quick Power On Self Test" Enabled (closest thing I could find)

3rd Set HD as First/Only Boot

4th I have 4 2Gb ram modules I removed slots 2 and 3 and tried boot no luck so I swapped out the two that were there with the two I had removed still no luck

How about trying removing add-on cards one at a time and see, could be some slots issue.

cheers ...

Problem solved... I feel a little dumb but to hopefully save someone else the same problem I should post the answer.

Your last post qhn prompted me to do a full strip down of the computer down to one memory stick and an old PCI video card and HD only. No problem existed...

Well to make a long story short I put it all back together and the problem was still gone... good thing but it didn't tell me what the problem was until I realized I hadn't put a USB pin drive I had plugged into the back of the computer before back in. I put it back in and vuala problem reappeared.

The question I have is if the computer is set to accept no other boot devices other than an HD why would it add such long boot times to the computer. Also I have had that thing back there forever(I kinda forgot it was there) and the problem just started a week ago.

Anyway most important part is the problem is solved and I thank you guys for your help!!!

I'm not really sure, but it could have something to do with either the power draw or the device attempting to establish a connection interfering with the normal boot sequence. I had an issue last week where my iPod seemed to freeze when charging. I restarted my computer and it wouldn't boot at all. It didn't even POST. But once I unplugged the iPod USB cable, it worked fine.

here are my ideas:

1. faulty hard drive. try removing the hdd and boot.

2. incompatibility vs motherboard and peripherals like video card, sound card, modem, or even RAM. try isolating these items removing one after every reboot.

3. faulty RAM modules. identify the error using memtest.

hope it helps.
