HP HDX 18t vs. Macbook Pro 17"

Thread Starter
For about the same price, I could get a:

HP HDX 18t
2.53 ghz Intel quad core
8 gb DDR3 memory
18 in screen
blu-ray

or

Macbook Pro
2.93 ghz dual core
4 gb DDR3
17" screen

Honestly, I *hugely* prefer using OS X... but the HP is definitely tempting, though I would be limited to using Windows or some Linux distribution. I would primarily be using the computer for web surfing, email, lots of word/excel, Matlab (scientific computing software), and the occasional game. Would I get a huge benefit from the HP, with its larger screen, blu-ray, more memory, and quad core?

If the benefits of the HP wouldn't be drastic, I would be inclined to stick with a Mac.

Any experiences with these laptops?

Thanks!

With the stated requirements, I would recommend you going with the HP HDX. Its hardware is more packed than the Macbook Pro. And it will be a while yet before Apple going Quad.

cheers ...

The only thing the HP really has going for it is the processor. The larger screen is actually slightly LOWER in resolution than the MBP considering the MBP is 1920x1200 and the HP is 1920x1080. So just because it's an inch larger doesn't mean it's better. And how often do you see yourself using the blu-ray drive? It's nice to have but, right now, blu-ray on computers is just novelty.

For what you'll be using the computer for, either of them, frankly, are overkill anyway.
