9300 Bios recovery

Hi,

Acer 9300

I was trying to play a video and the computer froze. I waited several minutes and nothing responded. I finally had to hold the power button to shut it down. Now it will not go to the bios screen and the screen shows a bit of brightening but does not go anywhere.

I've googled for a solution and there are several pieces of possible solutions I have found but as is too often the case, there were no follow up answers to make the posts helpful or, the answers came tantalizingly close like the following for a similar problem with an acer aspire 5315:

"1. first download the attached zip file and unzip it.
2. burn the extracted disc image to disc using nero.
3. place the newly burned cd into your laptop cd drive tray
4. remove the battery and power cord.
5. press and hold FN and ESC keep pressed and insert power cord and then press the power on button
6. your notebook should power up but without any display.
7. you should see the cd/dvd drive activity light blinking as it reads from the recovery disc.
8. if all is well your laptop should power itself down after about 2 minutes
9. once it has powered down remove the power cord and wait about five minutes.
10. finally insert your battery and power cord and power up your laptop in the normal way.

this should have solved your problem and you should now have a working laptop once again."

But I have no idea what to use for the bios for the 9300.

Any suggestions on how to hopefully find a bios file for a 9300 that will will work with the above?

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I did download that bios earlier today. The problem is my computer will not go to the bios screen much less boot into windows and the files inside that bios link are ABVXD.VXD flash.sys MAM_V120.EXE and ReadMe.txt which says:
Model:
Aspire 7000
Aspire 9300
TravelMate 7510

Launch MAM_V120.exe and then follow the program procedure to flash BIOS

So though this will update the bios, it does not work unless a working bios is not the issue. To give me hope, it seems as though the procedure described above is designed to work in situations like mine. All I need to do is find the needed files to work with.

Have you tried swapping the ram modules around, or removing one if you have 2?

No but I just did and I tried all the different options (two sticks) and nothing different occurred, the screen is dead except it gets a bit brighter after 7-10 seconds after power up.

A real bummer, my transmission just started acting up yesterday and now this.

Let us try the old cold start. Remove your battery and AC, hold down the power button for about 30-40 secs. Re-install battery and AC and try again.

I really do appreciate your interest in getting me going.

I tried your suggestion but no ceegar. Definitely seems to be a borked bios. I have so many other minor (& some not so minor) issues with this computer that I really need to deal with this myself or circular file it. It's out of warranty (3-4 months) and the cost of non warranty repair makes it disposable if I can't deal with it myself.

If there's a 3V battery inside for the bios I can remove, or a jumper to kill the bios, that might be a good thing. I have no idea how to get to such a a jumper or battery, they don't make this easy to get into like a laptop

i would say video failure on the mainboard, or memory failure. doubt the bios is bad or corrupt.

remove the memory door and try reseating the memory. you may also want to try each stick 1 at a time if you have 2 sticks. just make sure you turn off and uplug the unit when removing the memory

also, try hooking it up to an external monitor. any video?

No, nothing like that. I tried the other 5 possibilities with the ram earlier & no change. When I turn it on the only thing that happens is the HD light flashes twice, the CD light flashes onece, the HD light flashes again, the monitor shows a uniform brightness increase. Lastly, the power light remains on. and that's the end of it. There are no lights active on the thing except the power light.

I might have the old ram around here but if it were ram I'd expect a beep

most of the time if the memory fails, there are no beeps.

I just dug out my old ram and put them in. Sadly, no change, it's the same with the original ram.

Rats

I've been searching still for any files to recharge the bios. Apparently they do exist for the acer but so far the 9300 ones elude me.

It is a long shot, but I am giving it, taking from MicheleG's book.

Try removing the CMOS battery out and replace it.

G'mornin,

I came to the same conclusion and removed the bottom screws & well, all the screws I can find but darned if I can get it apart completely and I have yet to find the battery. They went out of their way to make replacement nearly impossible.

The keyboard had failed under warranty so they replaced that and the new one does not come off the same as the original and the tabs to depress are no longer visible and at the indentations there sems to be no tab when I press it with a tiny screwdriver. So the keyboard may be covering it but it's not obvious to remove like the original was.

So I have a bunch of screws in a dish and several covers removed from the bottom, I've managed to open part of the clamshell and peered inside but no battery can I see.

Miserable design.

As it is I will be trashing the computer if I can't get this issue resolved. It's no good if it won't work.

Use this as reference, where the CMOS battery is located:

I appreciate the help, you've been most kind.

I'm done with this laptop, it's taking too much time and considering the other things wrong with it that till now were nuisances, I need to get something to replace it with and get on with it.

Thanks you for all your thoughts on this to help me out.

First post here ...

This exact same thing just happened to my Acer 9300-3655 Laptop; I wish I had found this thread before I tried upgrading the BIOS.

I would like to get this laptop working again and give it to my son. Any chance anyone found a way to fix this? Or, does anyone know what specifically I should burn to a CD and try the original instructions?

I anyone can offer assistance, it would be sincerely appreciated.

Respectfully,

Eddie Dove
