Intel vs AMD war is heating up

With the latest new that Intel has been playing nasty in blocking out the competition with discount that is stringed with "delaying AMD based systems roll-out" to manufacturers like HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and NEC, and with a large fine by EU, South Korea and yet-to-come U.S. Federal Trade Commission; customers can now look forward to much more choices in the upcoming models.

The European Union fined Intel Corp. a record euro1.06 billion ($1.45 billion) on Wednesday, saying the world's biggest computer chip maker used illegal sales tactics to shut out smaller rival AMD.

The fine exceeded a euro899 million monopoly abuse penalty for Microsoft Corp. last year. Intel called the decision "wrong" and said it would appeal.

The European Commission says Intel broke EU competition law by exploiting its dominant position with a deliberate strategy to keep AMD out of the market that limited customer choice.

It said Intel gave rebates to computer manufacturers Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC for buying all or almost all their x86 computer processing units, or CPUs, from Intel and paid them to stop or delay the launch of computers based on AMD chips.

Intel president and CEO Paul Otellini said the company would appeal to the EU courts because "the decision is wrong" and "there has been absolutely zero harm to consumers." The company promised to comply with the EU order but criticized it as extremely ambiguous.

AMD's Europe president Giuliano Meroni said the EU order "will shift the power from an abusive monopolist to computer makers, retailers and above all PC consumers."

I think it had more to do with the EU and their stronger anti-monopoly rules than AMD. It didnt seem to phase Intel all that much, although maybe it will give AMD more breathing room!

Very much agreeing on this part, as with the latest and baddest Intel Core i7-975 XE and Core i7-950.

"Intel finally updated their Core i7 family and introduced two new solutions that feature not only higher clock frequency, but also have new D0 processor stepping. So, the new processors can boast not only better performance but also certain advantages during overclocking, improved heat dissipation and power consumption."

Detailed review can be read here.

"The complete model lineup of the Core i7 processor family looks like today (pic and statement credit to link above):

Furthermore the XE model boasted some crazy (?) over-clocking capability last year at IDF (Intel Developer Forum) in Shangai - an X9100 "flashed" at 4GHz!!!

Though the feast has yet been repeated.

Still we must be thankful to AMD to keep Intel in check in not over-blowing their price in order to get systems moving and selling.

cheers ...

I dont think it really matters until AMD can come with a processor to kick Intels butt then nothing will change...

Which AMD is probably not able to, hence doomed to play second roles.

It is about time!

that both Intel and AMD concentrate on developing good chips instead of playing dirty and causing one another to lose R&D money due to litigation.

Intel settles AMD claims...

cheers ...

Give me a break. The EU always likes to make itself look important by throwing around anti-trust claims and assessing pitiful 10 million dollar fines (or some other insignificant number to the scale of a billion dollar corporation) while nothing changes and Intel keeps dominating AMD up and down the street.
