trouble booting Ubuntu from USB on Sony Vaio

I'm resurrecting a PIII era Sony Vaio that has no cd drive. I created a bootable USB stick via Ubuntu, in the hopes of loading the distro this way. However, booting via USB isn't shown as an option in the BIOS. There's got to be a way to do this. Any help is greatly appreciated!

What you are going to have to do is create a boot disk. Does the Vaio have a Floppy in it?

Essentially what will happen is the computer would boot the floppy, and that in turn would load the distro from the USB drive.

no built-in or sony pcmcia floppy, would a generic usb floppy work? usb cd drive was not bootable.

Probably not. USB would have to be bootable in the BIOS, and it doesn't sound like yours is.

Can you put a bootloader on the harddrive?
