7805U-FX keeps freezing up.

Just bought this laptop from TigerDirect today and I'm having a problem with it already.

I can be just sitting surfing the internet and the computer will freeze up to where I have to hold down the power button to restart the computer.

The only symptoms I can really identify is this:

1)The fan speed acts very strange, it will stay off....then come on at full speed when it's time to cool. Then fluctuate between the 2nd speed and 1st speed setting.

2)It's pretty hard to catch but if you watch closely your able to see some lines go through the screen very quickly. Almost as if it's flickering.

Any help would be appreciated guys!

Freezing is not a good sign. Have you done anything at all to the notebook since you bought it?

To me it sounds like you are experiencing an overheated gpu.

Call up Gateway, you have 90 days warranty on refurbished systems, I believe.

Update. It's been freezing on and off, but it came back once and I had this down in the bottom right of the window.

"The display driver nvlddmkm has stopped working and been restored again"

Any ideas

Try this. Go to nVidia site and download the latest driver 185.85

Install it and see.

Downloaded and installed. I'll keep you updated if this helps/fixes/does nothing.

If it doesnt, and you havent added any software etc to contribute to this freezing, I would consider taking/sending the machine back to Tiger Direct.

The only problem is that I sold my other laptop.

and I only have a 8gig sd card to store my stuff on, so I'll loose everything.

And I got lucky and got the 1920X1200 screen with mine, so I'd like to have the same screen.

. Time to think about investing in an external storage

. How is it doing so far with the driver's update?

As of right now I've not had a problem with it yet.

Just got done playing MotoGP 08 and the only problem i've had is that the audio was skipping durning the cut scenes with the very high graphics.

During gameplay it was just fine.

Keep a close eye on it, especially the temp.

How do I keep an eye on the temps? Is there a program for it?

Hey Jamie.....

I just got the same laptop last week, and I was having some issues. Shutdown and restart with the screeen about windows not shutting down properly. I could not make the recovery disks either.

Today I installed the new Nvidia 185.85 drivers and all the issues have disappereared now.

Might be worth a try for you to install them. I got them at Nvidia.com

I 2nd the 185.85 gpu driver. It is working solid with the p-78xx models. Mine is for the 64bits Vista.

Mine are the 64bit drivers as well. Give them a try Jamie.

I suggest also due to the poor airflow design that you keep a can of compressed air handy and regularly blow out the fans and vents.

I had the same exact problem with my P6860-FX it would overheat and lockup without warning. In a rather normal temp room. Unlike some other laptop designs I have seen the vents are not particularly designed well (or maybe its the fan tuning) but I had to originally prop up the back of mine with a book to keep it properly ventilated. But after bi-weekly compressed air cleanings I found I no longer had to do this.

Either way I read your post and it sounded heat related.
