I'm down to Toshiba or HP, and I'm in that $500 to $700 range. Any strong opinions? Here are the ones I'm looking at.

Toshiba
L355-S7902 17 in, Intel Dual Core, 3GB Ram, 320 GB HD , Intel GMA X4500M Graphics (1342 MB total available memory) $579

L305-S5945 15.4, Pentium Duo 3400, 4GB Ram, 160 GB HD, Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M features 128MB - 1342MB dynamically allocated shared memory.$429

HP
dv6-1122us, 16 inch, AMD Turion x2, 4 GB Ram, ATI Radeon HD 3200 $599
dv6-1030us, 15.6 in., Intel 2 Dual Core, 4 GB, 320 GB HD, Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD up to 1759MB total video memory for intense detail. $679
G70-250us, 17 inch, Dual Core, 3 GB, 320 GB HD Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M with up to 1309MB graphics memory $649
G60-235dx, 15.6 in., 3 GB, 320 GB HD,Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M With up to 1309MB total video memory for high-powered graphics $499

Typical user, Internet, Photos, email. Not a big gamer, running no big programs. Thank you so much for any input.

I think I got all those graphic cards copy and pasted.....and underlined. Again, casual user, so while I assume the only Intel 2 Dual Core may be the "best", but at $679 is it $100-$200 better than the cheaper ones?

One more thing worth mentioning. I was originally looking at a Dell Vostro 1520 that after the 35% off they are running was around $620 that was a Intel 2 Dual Core (2.16GHZ) with 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HD, which had a Radeon 9800 card, and on paper the most bang for the buck. Basically had eqaul to or better than anything listed above. The problem is I've talked to several people and the big chains that sell Dells, HPs, Toshibas, and they all say Dell's are plastic and trash and HPs and Toshibas are built way better. I do have a 4 and 8 year old that will be using it as well, so durability is important. Are Dells "lesser" computers? If I can get more bang for the buck is Dell worth getting?

The Dell Vostro comes out with better specs than the ones you mentioned in OP. Other than that I would take the HP dv6-1122us (AMD Fan )

It is hard to say what is good or bad. Main thing is that you might want to get an extended warranty, regardless of what brand/model.

cheers ...
