Asus F3sc - CPU upgrade

Hi everybody!

I've got an F3sc with a T7100 cpu in it. It has BIOS version 209 installed. It uses a Socket P PM965 mobo.

As far as I'm aware, the T7300/7500 will upgrade no probs. But what about the T7700 or even the 45nm T9300?

I can't find a CPU support list for my lappy anywhere.

can somebody help?

Thanks

any of those options should work fine. You can upgrade up to any of the socket P Merom/Peryn codename processors with 800 Mhz FSB and 35W power requirements.

Ok, thanks. I thought that it might be like regular ATX mobos, where the BIOS had to support specific CPU's.

Ebay has a T8300 for sale and I've also found a T7700/7500.

For notebooks, the chipset has to support the CPU, and the Intel mobile 965 chipset supports a lot of different processors.

One more question. Will the OEM product code (OS) still remain useable after a CPU upgrade or do you need to purchase another license?

Just thought I'd ask before I pressed the "buy now" button.

It will still be usable, but you might have to contact Microsoft for activation.

cheers ...

Yes it will still be usable. The main items product activation looks at are motherboard and hard drive. I reinstalled XP via my OEM disc after upgrading the CPU on my Asus Z71V notebook, and it worked fine.

CPU upgrade. please help

Hi,

Update with regards to upgrading my F3Sc CPU.*

I have since bought a T8300 CPU and am having a bit of trouble.

The CPU is only running at half speed! The BIOS only recognises 1200Mhz and so does CPU-Z. The FSB only seems to be running at 200Mhz instead of 800Mhz.

According to wikipedia the CPU's (T7100 original) and the T8300 are both 800Mhz FSB and 35W CPUs so I thought they would be compatible.

I reset the BIOS to default and uninstalled the CPU from device manager and no change.

Has anyone else come acroos this or know of any solutions?

thanks
LL

Going by what CPUZ says your Rated FSB(Front side bus) speed is running at 800MHz. You get four transfers per cycle of an actual 200Mhz giving you a theoretical 800Mhz, this is normal and your FSB is fine. The problem appears to be with your multiplier. Did you set it at x6 or did the computer do that by its self. Its should have put it self at a x12, see "bus core ratio" here: http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SLAPA

Oh yeah it it should be x12 because the CPU multiplier works off of the actual FSB witch is 200Mhz giving you the 2400Mhz your T8300 needs.

SkimMilk, thanks for the reply.

The computer set the multiplier by itself. I can't change it in the BIOS, it's all greyed out, so is there another way?

cheers

Interesting... I don't know... I'll see if I can get some better minds here to help.

So I take it the CPU is stuck at that frequency, even when you do something intensive? I'm asking because that looks about right for what your CPU should be at when idle, since Intel processors go into a lower frequency when they're not needed and then Speedstep up to the rated frequency when their full power is required.

Djembe,

Thought that might be the case, but I tried opening up lots of programs at once, so the CPU maxed out (see pic in next post) and the multiplier didn't change at all.

Another symptom is that the windows experience index dropped to 4.5 for the T8300 CPU. The original T7100's score was 4.8.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to try a OS rebuild but I think I'll have to give that a go. Strange though, that even the BIOS doesn't recognise the correct multiplier.

sorry, the pic wasn't added in the last post

Windows Experience Index is a very subjective and not terribly accurate performance check, so I wouldn't pay much attention to it.

What concerns me is that you said your BIOS doesn't recognize the correct multiplier. If your CPU won't speedstep in Windows, there can be a driver problem or a program that's interfering, but if it doesn't show up correctly in BIOS, I'm not really sure what the problem is...

edit: out of curiosity, could you please say what exactly it does say in your BIOS about your processor? For instance, I have a Pentium M 735 in my notebook, and BIOS says
  • Intel(R) Pentium(R) M
  • Speed: 1700 Mhz
despite the fact that due to a frontside bus overclock, my CPU actually runs at 2266 Mhz, which I can confirm in Windows with both RMClock and Everest.

BIOS
Processor: intel core 2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.4Ghz
Speed: 1200Mhz

That's all the detail it gives on the CPU.

On the POST screen:
intel core 2 Duo CPU T8300
current speed: 100Mhz

Wierd huh.

I downloaded RMClock and played around with it. Finally got the multiplier to change to x12 and the CPU can run @ 2400Mhz!

very weird, but I'm glad RMClock fixed it for you!

Still not ideal, having to run RMclock to get the right speed. But at least I now know that the CPU is good and the chipset can support it.

Thanks for you persistance and tips, much appreciated.
