S/PDIF 5.1 output in Aurora 9700

Hi, I recently bought a digital optical cable to connect my 9700's sound to my audio receiver, but I noticed I'm not able to output 5.1 sound to my speakers. I've already changed the configuration in the sound properties to 5.1 surround sound, and the SoundMax application shows the picture with the 5 speakers, but when I either play a video with 5.1 sound or run the SoundMax sound test to output sound to each of the speakers, only the front-right and front-left speakers output any sound. Also, my receiver display says that it's only receiving sound for those 2 speakers.

Does anyone know if I need to do some other configuration to output 5.1 sound through the S/PDIF connection?

Thanks!

S/PDIF connection only carries one digitally coded signal, meaning that although you can get 5.1 out of digitally encoded files (AC3 aka Dolby Digital), you can only get one channel through, which would only be stereo, in this case.

You can try some hardware splitter between the notebook and the sounds system, and hope to get some think better than the stereo.

I might be wrong

But the S/PDIF cable is able to carry the 6 channels (5 channels for the speakers and 1 for the subwoofer) since the signal is digital, it's just that the digital optical output on my laptop is just sending a stereo signal. That's how I connect my PS3 to my receiver, and I can get 5.1 surround sound, so I'm thinking it must be a configuration problem on my laptop, unless the output on the 9700 was just designed to output 2 channels

Has anybody used this output with a 5.1 receiver?

Are you sure that your PS3 uses ToSlink and NOT S/PDIF?

I thought TOSlink and S/PDIF were almost the same thing, TOSlink being the cable and S/PDIF being the type of signal. Anyway, yes, the PS3 also uses the same TOSlink cable as my m9700, it's the one with the square connector.

Got an interesting read here, paying attention to the channel status bit set. In your comp, or many notebooks that I own and know off, only 2 channels are being set.
