Acer Aspire 3660

Hello, I'm new to the forum. Hope I can be as much to others as they might be to me on this occasion.

First thing, I don't post on forums without searching for the answer before hand. Google is fantastic for that sort of thing, but some questions are too complexed for even google to grasp with just a hand full of key words.

My dad has an Acer Aspire 3660, a few years old but that's not relevant I think. His laptop had 512mb of RAM and I bought an extra 1GB to put in the spare module slot it had. I was extra careful to select RAM that was as identical as I could make it with the exception of the make. I've done loads of upgrades and PC builds in the past.

The problem is this. The system sees 1GB only, the new module, ignoring the old one (512mb). I have used Sandra diag software to see which memory banks are 'working'.

I have tried: swapping the modules between bank one and two, removed the 512mb (still sees 1GB only, obviously) and removing the 1GB module (reverts back to 512mb, obviously).

Both modules are ddr2-sodimm modules. I'm pretty sure that the m/b supports 2GB. Correct me if I'm wrong. Any ideas?

First of all, welcome to NBF. The best place to answer any questions regarding memory and what a model can handle, what type etc is to go to crucial.com and either scan using the computer or click on the Manufacturer, model etc in the drop down lists.
Just went to crucial looking for an Aspire 3660 and there is no such animal. Are you sure its a 3660. I see a 3630 and a 3680

I agree, it's not there. This page shows I'm not going crazy though http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers...k/as_3660.html

I can't get my hands on the laptop now, so I'll have to wait before I can run the software to see what it makes of the situation. Thanks for the suggestion.

If anyone else has ideas feel free.

Very unhappy camper indeed. We never seemed to have an issue with our Firewire card and camcorder. Think some people just need profession help (not IT support)

I saw this also. Not sure about the 'chip' story. Doesn't explain why the new module Works, but not with the old module at the same time. Thanks though.
