Acer Extensa 5220 won't turn on!

Hi all,
I have an Acer extensa 5220 laptop, which suddenly decided this morning that it wont turn on any more! It was working perfectly fine, has good anti-virus, etc., and worked fine an hour before but now when it's turned on, the power button goes green and nothing else happens. It's not been dropped or banged, was not plugged into the mains at the time (but can that rule out a surge the last time it was plugged in?)There is not even a flicker on the screen, the fan doesn't come on, but I think the hard-drive hums. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with it?
I want to try and avoid bringing it into a shop to be repaired if I can at all.
Any ideas or help will be greatfully appreciated!
Thanks guys,
Mairead.

Try doing a hard reset. Unplug it, remove the battery. press and hold the power on switch for about a min. Replace the battery, plug it in and try powering it up

Hi Saugen48,
I tried doing the hard reset, no joy unfortunately.
I think somehow my harddrive has been fried, I've given in and brought it into a repair shop. Fingers crossed it's a simple problem!
Thanks for the help, will let you know what the "doctor" says!

Hi all, just to let you know the motherboard was surged on my laptop, have to send it to the big computer factory in the sky! Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated.
Anyone know where I could possibly lay my hands on a motherboard, or is it better to just get a new laptop?

I personally would go with a new comp. Prices are on the buyers side at the moment.

Either do a Google search for "replacement acer extensa 5220 motherboard" or look around EBay

This is an old thread, but there may be someone with a similar problem, so I will respond with one solution.

The same thing happened to my wife's Acer.

We found a small, normally closed switch in the upper left corner of the keyboard, which acts like a refrigerator light switch, closing the switch when the laptop is opened.  It was jammed.  With a pen tip, I cleaned the bits of dirt.  The laptop powers up fine now.

Hope this helped anyone with a similar problem.
