what do you guys think of this laptop? I'm not really informed about the brand Acer, and am wondering if it's reliable (resistant to overheating etc.)

think it's a good buy? thanks.

Good price for good specs. Acer is a good name brand like any others.

I am not quite sure what you mean regarding "resistant to overheating". All notebooks run warmer than PCs desktops, keep them elevated, on hard surface and good ventilation, they should run fine. It is true that there are many brands/models run warmer than others.

There were a couple of reviews supplied at the link you provided. Here was one of the comments about heat. Note: he was also using a seperately purchased netbook cooler too.

Using SpeedFan, CPU temps got all the way up to 73C when running 3DMark06 WITH a notebook cooler, which is insanely high. I wonder if the processor life is shortened by those temperatures. Idles around 46-52C. However, despite these high temperatures, the outside of the laptop doesn't get very hot.
Overall, happy with my purchase, but it's good to be informed.

temps on it are fine. however if you are really concerned about heat, you should probably be looking at an intel C2D penryn cpu

thanks for the help guys. I just ordered the laptop, and heat was a main concern of mine as my former laptop broke due to overheating

Keep an eye on it, sometimes a new application of thermal paste resolves the heating up issue.

Also, where and how you use it can contribute to overheating. Never operate it on a soft surface where the fans/vents are blocked ie bed, lap. Make sure it is elevated slightly off any surface. Keep the vents/fans clean of dust/hair with canned air periodically(make sure its unplugged and turned off when you do this and try to keep the fan from overspinning with the end of a paper clip when blowing)

thanks for the help.

so I just got the laptop in the mail. it looks great so far, and I've got speedfan running.

what's a normal CPU temp?
so far it jumps from 51C to 63C, depending on usage (is that high?)

That is really not bad at all. Clean up your start up processes and services, keep drivers up to date, defrag your drive often, and you are set.

I would suggest uninstalling the 60 day antivirus that comes with it and install a freebie like Avast which is very good. Also turn on the Windows firewall as its a good two way.
If the AV is Nortons, Nortons at their website have removal tools for each variation.
Make sure that all traces of one AV is gone before installing an running another AV
