ASUS F3Jr - Upgrading my hard disk

Hi,

Not sure if this is considered modding and if I've appropriately placed this issue in the correct area.

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my hard disk. I'm just not sure if it's possible to do it and if I will be able to move all of the data (including my existing windows vista along with the recovery partition) to the new and bigger drive. I currently have a 120Gb Hd and I'm planning to go all the way up to 500Gb if possible.

Others have suggested using Copywipe to transfer all of the partitions.

Question is, has anybody actually done this successfully?

Upgrading your hard drive is very much possible. The hard part will be to copy the contents of you entire hard drive to the new hard drive. I'm guessing you don't have access to multiple hard drive spots on your notebook?

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply.

When you say multiple hard drive spots I assume you are referring to multiple disks or partitions? Unfortunately not, I only have 1 hard disk with 120Gb of space split into 3 partitions. One is 30Gb system drive, 80Gb is data and the remaining 10 is the recovery partition. It was suggested that I get an external HD enclosure and put the new drive there then do the transfer.

Personally i wouldn't try to move all the partitions, I would start fresh. Get the new 500 gig hard drive (make sure its those faster ones 7200 rpm+) and create a new set of partition to your liking. And then transfer your files at 3 gigs at a time. My friend once tried to tranfer 120 gigs at once, burned out the hard drive.

Any 500GB 7200 2.5" other than the Seagate's in the supply chain yet? Are the Seagate's still having issues?

Thanks SKF, I'm actually planning on retaining the main partition (drive C) at 30Gb and the rest goes to data drives. So probably transferring the whole C drive is the most important... then after that, transferring the recovery partition. I'll just move other partitions and resize after moving. Does that sound like a good plan?

I don't think you can "transfer" the recovery partition from one hard drive to another. Cloning (using Acronis, per example) is the best way to "copy" it over.

Thanks qhn, I'll check Acronis out... I've done some research on using Copywipe and it's supposedly capable of doing the job. One other thing I have to check out is if my laptop can handle the 500Gb drives or if it'll only go up to a certain capacity (based on the bios). Hopefully it can...

What's your notebook model?

It's a bit old, an ASUS F3Jr.

Nothing wrong with the model, solid specs as I can see. I recommend sticking with 320gb/7200rpm hard drive or less for the upgrade.

I renamed your thread to reflect the system.

cheers ...

Thank qhn, appreciate that. Yep, 320 is also a good option... I am often using external drives anyway. Now to identify which is a good target brand....
