Vista SP2 - HDD space gain then loss, other advantages

Hey this morning I found out Vista service pack 2 was released, how does everyone think of it? So far I haven't seen a lot of different, although performance wise does seem a bit slower at first glance.

I just downloaded and installed it a few hours ago....thanks to qhn for this... can't really tell if there's a difference. According to an article here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/16552..._download.html

There's supposed to be a lot of security and performance improvements.... Good thing though that they didn't package it with IE8... been hearing bad stories about IE8 (compatibility as well).

Firefox performance is not being influenced with this SP2 update (32 and 64 bits).

It is true that after the SP2 update, you need to pick up the update for IE8 compatibility view.

Personal observation is that in and out of hibernation and resuming are much more solid and quick.

I experienced a couple few anomalies, I'm not sure if its related to the service pack 2 update. My adobe acrobat would fail when its converting a doc to pdf and sometimes when I type things up in word, it's invisible until i highlight it. Not sure if it was caused my service pack 2, but I never seen that happen before the update.

You might want to reinstall the Adobe Reader. I am not sure about (MS) Word, cannot replicate what you mentioned.

Vista SP2 - gained 30GB of space??!!

After installing Service Pack 2 this morning, I gained 30GB of free space. I had 137GB of free space this morning and now I have 167GB. How did this happen? Is this ok?

Interesting. This is definitively good new, since Vista is known for making disk space disappearing mysteriously

We need to dig up more on this. Thanks for the head up.

Is this something I should be worried about or is it good? What could've been freed up that allowed me to gain 30GB?

I personally think that it is good. Shadow volume, pagefile handling ... all of these can swallow your disk space for (sometimes) no good reasons.

ok thank you. So it seems SP2 has more advantages than Microsoft stated. I'm looking forward to what others have to say about their installation. I can't be the only one with such a big HDD space boost.

I find it weird because I run CCleaner and defrag often along with taking good care of my PC and keeping it clean. I guess there were some extra Windows files that weren't needed that we're just taking up space. I never did a clean install of Vista when I got it, so maybe SP2 cleaned up some extra files. My computer came pre-installed with SP1, fyi.

You were right!

I checked my other HP drive (Vista SP1) before the just now updated to SP2. Main partition properties showed a whopping 30gigo extra!?!

I have not yet found any explanations or remarks about this on the net. This is getting more and more interesting.

By the way, after the SP2 update, you'd have the IE8 update. After this, leave the comp idle for about 15-20 minutes, Vista would re-arrange the boot file for you. I noticed a jump in start up and performance after this. And again this is by chance that I saw this, when leaving my comp alone for 1/2 hour and coming back.

cheers ...

My best guess is that the new service pack deleted all the unneeded extra updates that were installed before. At any rate, that's a fantastic gain!

this is great news! Everyone should be happy with the extra space and performance gain.

BTW, I just wanted to add in that my laptop is an HP too. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Maybe HPs have more temporary windows files sitting around from the original install of windows.

Also, some people have said that if you notice a big free-up in space, then you had a lot of junk files sitting around that were cleaned up and that you had a messy computer. I run CCleaner and take good care of my computer and I assume that qhn does the same so I don't think it's because we've been lazily taking care of our computers.

I tend, at this moment, to go with Djembe good guess. Vista SP2 just finally "has" the "it"(?)

Sounds good to me. Yay Microsoft.

Well, I've decided to run a little test. I took a screenshot of the "my computer" screen on my Lenovo review unit and am now downloading Vista SP2. I'll take another screenshot after the update and see if anything changed and by how much.

Well, there wasn't any hard drive space gain on my review unit. It went from 99.4GB available SP1 to 99.2GB available SP2.
