hmmm. Interesting. So far, it seems HP notebooks get the biggest gains.

Same here... I didn't really see any increase in disk space after installing SP2. Maybe it did just cleanup old updates lest the gain in space...

One thing that happened in my case was I had to install a few programs since I kept getting error messages from Vista telling me it might be possible that the app wasn't installed properly.... after re-installing, the problems went away...

I sure hope there is a performance gain with SP2...

What brand notebook do you have?

So far, I know of 2 people with HP notebooks (one being me) and we've both gotten 30GB of more free space.
I also know of a Dell notebook that got no extra space, along with a lenovo.

I use an ASUS notebook. My system drive partition is only 30Gb and only around 10-14Gb is used by Vista... after SP2 install, the size was roughly around the same.

freed up 8 or so GB for me on my notebook

So Compcln.exe runs automatically as part of SP2, correct?

ahh it looks like it cleared out all the VSS stuff (which is not pleasing atually can be bad in some situations), so all old Previous Versions and System Restore points are gone. just one System Restore point to undo SP2

I clean out old system restore points using Disk Cleanup weekly, and I still gained 30GB of space. The SP2 does more:

Quote:

“SP2 also includes a Service Pack Clean-up tool (Compcln.exe), which helps restore the hard disk space by permanently deleting the previous versions of the files (RTM and SP1) that are being serviced by SP2. The Pack Clean up tool can also be run offline while creating slipstream images to reduce the size of the image,” Microsoft informed.
I guess the previous versions were taking up a lot of space.

I am sure that Vista SP1 and relevant updates took a lot of space. Let us just hope that SP2 will not start the clustering up again.

cheers ...

Nice. So it seems it's not just HPs.

I gotta give props to Microsoft for doing a nice job freeing up space with SP2.

Gained 25+gb on the Sony CS21-S/V (Vista Home Premium 32 bits)

cheers ...

Yep, gained 20gb here on my Toshiba..

Maybe the guys who aren't seeing any gains didn't have as much junk in their computers as we do

Hopefully not

I clean and clear out my systems at shutdown - and this means cache, cookies, browser histories, applications temp files etc ....

I do keep Windows updates/hot fixes though. The only observation I got so far, is that all my restore points are lost, except for the one just before the SP2 installation. But still, this does not translate to gigo's of gaining disk space.

cheers ...

While SP2 may have freed up space for some... the experience with others was they had to re-install a few programs. Happened to me to hopefully everyone else won't be surprised if some programs encounter problems after the upgrade.

What are the apps that you have to reinstall so far? I experience none.

Hi,

Had to reinstall Yahoo Messenger, Alcohol 52% and one other app that I forgot.

I suddently got error messages saying that a particular app may not have installed successfully....

This happened after installing SP2.... no other stuff we're updated.

Yahoo Messenger was a non-issue after SP2 update for all of my comps - 32 and 64 bits.

Version installed before the update was 9.0.0.2161 (it is now 2162)

cheers ...
