Vista SP2 - HDD space gain then loss, other advantages - Page 3

I installed this and i noticed no changes at all...

I guess it's different for everyone. While problems are not consistent, problems can occur. I subscribed into Windows Answers website and there was also a whole lot of issues raised on affected programs with the SP2 upgrade. This was also the case (and more) with IE8.

I'm already down to 153GB of free space. I had 167 after installing SP2. All I've downloaded is a few songs. What is making me lose all the space I gained with SP2? I run CCleaner often and clean up my old System Restore Points. Any ideas?

You want to check again at the beginning of system start up and at the end of the day, before you shut it down?

cheers ...

Ya my gains are going away too. I gained 20gb after installing sp2...now i have lost 10gb and haven't installed anything. And run ccleaner everyday.

Now I'm down to 148GB. I don't understand where the space is going. It seems like whatever extra junk was removed with SP2 is slowing adding back up.
What should I do to regain my space?

Thanks

Same here! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm down to 143GB.
I had 137GB free before I installed SP2, 167 after installation, and have slowly gone down to 143GB, which is where I'm at now.

I don't understand where this space is going. It seems like whatever was cleared out with SP2 is slowing piling back up. I wish we could find out what it is so we can delete it again.

Anyone have any ideas?

Down to 142GB this morning...

Already lost 12 out of 15 gained, almost back to square 1.

I had my weekly Disk Cleanup this morning, but that was only a gain of 100 MB
and my scheduled monthly defrag. (no downloads neither).

Ya, you and I are both dealing with the same problem. It's ok since we're not losing any more than we started with, but I just want to find out where the space is going. And gigs at a time!

Is there a good program that I can use to analyze my HDD and find out where these gigs have gone recently?

Thanks

Hi Personally I wouldn't be able to reply to that question (perhaps a moderator ??? )

All 15 GB I gained with Service Pack 2 have now been lost.
Probably goes for everyone else as well !

Time to close this thread probably ?

You lost it too?? So it seems like everyone is losing the space we gained. - I'm just trying to figure out, where did the space go?

Well as long as it doesn't go lower than what I had before, just have to accept it I suppose.
Only hope it doesn't continue on a downward spiral !!!

Changed the thread title to reflect the gain & loss of disk space.

It would be worth knowing what is happening, that is if one can give a specific (scientific) answer

cheers ...

thanks for the new title.

Ya, I'm just trying to figure out where the space was gained, and why it's gone. Hopefully I won't keep losing it.

Is there a program that can help me analyze my HDD and see where I lost a gig per day over the past few weeks?

I don't know of a program that does what you're looking for, but I've got an idea and a way to test it.

The idea (I think it was suggested earlier in this thread) is that the new service pack wiped out all your restore points in system restore, thus freeing up all the disk space that the data from those restore points used.

The way to test it is to disable system restore and see if you re-gain the space that you lost (again).

I just done a manual disk clean-up, as I will be away for a week as of tomorrow, and guess what, I regained 14.7 GB, mainly it seems from restore points, although my clean-up of last Monday only gave me 100 MB. Strange things are happening........But I've regained again what I lost.....Until when I don't know ?

What do you mean by "manual disk clean-up" ?
