You're the first to say something on this. I doubt it's true.

some Alienware assembly plants have closed down, so that's what your friend might have been talking about. However, Dell is promoting Alienware as their high-end gaming brand, and there doesn't seem to be any reason to shut it down.

From what I heard all Alienware factories (Including Florida) are closing, but Dell will continue to manufacture Alienware inhouse.

My only question is: "If I order a M17x will it come in an Alienware box or a Dell box?

It should be an Alienware box.

As I understand and mentioned before, Dell is letting Alienware in charge of the gaming machine division within Dell.

cheers ...

I haven't heard that anywhere else, but coming from you I certainly won't believe it. Are you hoping AW folds? Maybe a Dell would be just the thing for you to get next.

Since Alienware doesn't even make notebooks (actually not just stamp there name) not sure how this would affect us anyway? Other than the cool lights?

Neither does Dell

However, part of Dell procedure for ordering from ODMs is requiring that they don't sell the same model to anybody else, which means in effect that you can't actually buy Dell systems (and presumably now the same would apply to Alienware systems) anywhere else.

By the way ... that's not quite true. Alienware does not make the individual components, but the do (did?) design and assemble everything in their factory. Had a chance to tour the Headquarters and factory in Miami and it was impressive.

If they are now totally one with Dell, the way it affects us is that's just one more entity gone who was creating PCs and notebooks geared towards gamers. Alienware did have a nice feature set, especially for higher end gaming notebooks. I'm not saying they were perfect, but they made some very nice products.

Have also heard that they will be closing their factories, but operating within Dell. We'll just have to see.
