CPU Cooler

Hey guys,

Just got a new Mobo, but I have to say my one main weakness is CPU fans. I dont know much about compability with boards/sockets.

From what I pieced together on Newegg you look at socket types to figure out wether or not a certain CPU fan will fit?

Here is my mobo.




My question is how do you figure out what CPU fan is compatible with your CPU/Mobo and whats the significance of the black plastic part surrounding the CPU socket? Does it get removed when you purchase a CPU fan or is it part of the mounting process?

Please school me in CPU fans ASAP!!

That appears to be a socket 939 AMD motherboard. There are a LOT of coolers that will fit that. As long as you have a decent sized case you have nearly any option open to you. On the specifications list for any cooler it should tell you what CPU socket types its compatible with. In your case AMD socket 939.

The black plastic thing is part of the default AMD retention mechanism. Theres some aftermarket heatsinks that use that mechanism while others have you remove it and use a custom one for that specific heatsink.

In general something to look for would have copper heatpipes and a 120mm fan. I use this heatsink myself and its performed above any expectations on a very overclocked CPU. However it needs a large case to call home. Since you have a micro ATX motherboard I dont know if you'd have a big case too.

Hey Twilight, glad to see your still around.

Yea I knew it was Socket 939 I forgot to mention that. The one you looks nice but this computer is for my mother so I can skip on the ultra low temps. I basically just need something that will do the job without breaking the bank. Her computer is ready to go but if I turn it on I'll fry the CPU, hence no cooler.

I was thinking of this one, Im guessing the plastic retention mechanism will come off to make way for this this guy http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233022

Again, its just to have a cooler, I dont need anything fancy. And her case is a 'midtower'

Hi Ghaz I'm always around

That heatsink looks like it should attach using the plastic already on there. So basically its just fastening the cross bar to the plastic. It gets good reviews and they say its quiet so I say why not. Go for it.
