Haw many GB should a M17 have available out of the box? 256GB drive

Haw many GB should a M17 with the 256GB Solid State Drive have available right out of the box? Local disc C has only 229GB total (149GB free of 229GB {now that I've installed some stiff}), I thought it would have more considering its a 256GB drive. Is it normal to have only 229GB free? My notebook has the Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad processor, 4GB -DDR3, and one AIT 387 card, I don’t know if that makes a difference.

A 256gb drive will usually have a formatted capacity of around 249gb , im not sure if this is the same for SSD's though.

The method of finding this info out will always be the same as long as there is disagreement over the definition of GB and GiB. Follow this method:

256 GB * 10^9 B / 1 GB * 1 GiB / 2^30 B = 238 GiB.

This is roughly the amount of usable space on the drive. Of course this decreases due to the MBR, installed Operating System(s), and hidden partitions.

The format compacity will have around the 238 but then add the OS system on there and it will drop you to around 229...

Don't forget that SSD's usually leave some room on the disk for wear leveling algorithms as well. The amount depends from one manufacturer to another.

The formatting process usually takes away about 10% of the drive's total capacity.
