Acer 8930 Subwoofer (& resolution)

I have a 5.1 output on my comp and after reading up on Wikipedia I'm still not sure whether I should be getting sound from 5 or all 6 speakers. In the test thing it says ; If the low frequency sounds are not heard from the subwoofer (Tuba) then I should check the "Swap" box to swap the center speaker for the subwoofer, which seems to indicate I should normally be getting sound from all 6 speakers, as when I make the test Icones all 6 speakers send out soundwaves. I'm pretty sure that, in the past, I was getting sound from all the speakers, and that the subwoofer was a lot stronger than before. Anyone have any ideas on this one ??? Thanks.

Have you done any updates lately? When did you notice this "not stronger" than before? Tried different media player?

It's all updated, I mean't to say the subwoofer was a lot stronger than it is now. It gives the same sound when I swap as the center speaker

It's the same output and sound, pretty mediocre, on WMP or the Acer Arcade de Luxe or on the main screen. Even setting up the virtual surround speaker icones doesnt change anything

What about trying with another subwoofer, to see if it is a hardware issue?

and shouldn't I be getting sound from all 6 speakers ????

You should.

Get another subwoofer? Or better yet take your notebook to a store and try out one of their 6 speakers systems. That is what I would do.

Acer 8930 Subwoofer problem fixed

Have just fixed my subwoofer problem by uninstalling the driver in Device Manager and reinstalling from eRecovery.
Done an uninstall from eRecovery first of all, but then only got a reinstall of Microsoft HD Stereo, instead of Realtek HD Audio with 5.1 Output. No need to check it out at the store now, all six
speakers working again with a nice loud Subwoofer.
It sometimes is so simple ; like certain operating system problems, you can spend hours trying to find a solution, and all it needs is a reboot !

Just for future reference, this post should have been added to your original query post, to keep things together. Congrats on your fix

Saugen48 and qhn

I agree with you about keeping things together : I just thought (knowing other people have these problems) that they might not have followed up the conversation further and wouldn't have known the fix, so I posted where they could be sure of seeing it.
I shall do as you say in the future and keep it all together, like a good little boy :-)

@tgbrindley:

It was not an issue :-) We work together to keep NBF clean and clear. Suggestions of threads merging come up all the time. And where it is being applied, we will merge them; when not, we leave them.

Thanks for being part of NBF, and coming back with resolution.
