netbook or laptop? based on my needs...

Thread Starter
I need a computer for traveling. I need it for surfing the internet watching youtube videos/checking email/posting photos. I especially need it to edit and upload basic youtube videos. I will be installing dreamweaver onto it and using it as an ftp client (to upload and update webpage, light work).

I went to staples and checked out both laptops and netbooks. What I found is that the netbooks are very light and easy for travel. Definitely something I like. I have skinny fingers so the keyboard size didn't bother me.

However I know that there are different netbooks priced at different ranges. Some netbooks were built for gaming. I need to find one that is suitable to run dreamweaver and edit basic videos. (netbooks don't have firewire ports do they?)

For laptop, I like the Dell mini 12". It's the thinnest I've seen (that is not apple branded). It's about 699 and that's above my budget.

I'm aiming for something around 500-600.

So my question is are there any netbooks that are strong enough to handle light video editing and run dreamweaver? (dreamweaver is not a big program..about 52 mb.)

Thanks for reading and hope someone knows..or are into netbooks..If it wasn't for the size of netbooks, I'd definitely go with a laptop..but I need to probably be on the road every other day..

Thanks.

A netbook? Probably not. The Atom can only handle so much efficiently. And the screen is probably too small for video editing.

I would probably take a look at this:

Good processor, a slight step above the Atom found in many netbooks. Light, about 5 and a half pounds. Sufficient screen size. And its $419, w/o shipping or taxes.

Some netbooks were built for gaming? The screen really limits the usefulness though ...

No netbooks were built for gaming. If you really mean light video editing? Then sure. Your budget does not allow for anything close to real editing. I think netbooks are worth looking at.

I'd recommend looking into a cheaper notebook. Even a low-end notebook will be more powerful than a netbook, and for video editing, you want something with as much power as you can afford.

Incidentally, the Dell Mini 12 is also a netbook. You want something with at least a dual-core processor. The Dell Outlet may have some decent options in your price range.

Here's one around your price range...

I'd agree with Djembe, go for a small notebook instead of a netbook. Eventually you might start looking for the processing power....
