Dell Inspiron 1526 Won't Boot

Hello All,

My Inspiron 1526 won't boot up. It was working fine this morning but came home to find it on with no video; I leave it on at all times. I keep it plugged into a UPS there were no power outages either way.

Now when I try to boot it the keyboard lights will flash as normal, the DVD drive will make a noise like it's doing something, but the screen remains dead and hard drive light never indicates activity.

Anybody have any idea what might be going on? Thanks.

Do any of the LED lights stay on?

Eg power Led, Battery Charge Led ? etc

Hi Dave,

The only light that remains on is the power light. The HD, battery, wi-fi, and some other light remain off. The keyboard (caps lock, etc.) also remain off and can't be activated by the keyboard. Thanks for your assistance.

Typically the numlock is illuminated to indicate its booting. So the power led and the numlock is all you need to be looking for. However, I think the numlock typically turns off once the OS boots all the way up? Anyway, doesn't sound like its booting. Try to use the diagnostic partition (FN+On). It gives out an error code my flashing the keyboard LED's. You can search this code online to find out what it corresponds to. If I had to guess, I'd say your video card is dead.

Thanks for your help, zz.

I tried the FN+power button procedure last night; I found that on the Dell site. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Not only did I never get video, but it is supposed to produce some sort of beeps in those cases. No beeps ever came.

I don't know how this notebook got so screwed up. I really don't do much with it.

well you can try the standard checks

Remove hard drive, CD ROM (if Possible) even the wireless cards etc and try booting just the base unit on battery only, on AC only.

Also try one memory stick at a time.

Hello funbunny,
Same thing happened to my Inspiron 9300. I failed to pass through the test of Flat-Panel Monitors at the Dell's technical support web page. External monitor advice did not work either. I was told that it's likely either faulty video card or a faulty system board.

if the HDD light doesnt blink repeatedly (e.g. not booting), most likely the mainboard is dead. otherwise its the video card. take it to a repair shop. some of the smaller shops provide free quotes. could be something as simple as blown $0.10 capacitor.

@funbunny: I have the exact same issue........my post is below:

@zzpulp, when i press Fn+ON only the number lock flashes while the two other cap lock & (?????) plus the ON led remains lit.

My Dell Inspiron 1526 won't restore after hibernation.

After a recent Vista update the laptop was placed in hibernation mode before the normal 'restart to complete update' process. After a minute or so i press a button expecting to see a logon screen, instead the monitor was off, blank screen with no power. I presss every button but nothing happened. After a restart the monitor remains off but i can still hear 1526 checking the cd drive. I restarted several times trying the Fn+F8 option with an external monitor and pressing the up button while holding Fn but still the same.

1526 appear to be in a wierd state because i placed a XP boot cd and restart then hit Enter several times. If the backlight or inverter was the only problem then 1526 would boot from the cd as normal though i wouldn't be able to see. It doesn't, it simply power up, checks the cd drive then does nothing.

The multimedia buttons lights up when i press them and the fan is on.

Warranty is expired.
How can i fix it?
