Windows 7 Official Release Date Announced!!

post #1 of 16

Microsoft announced earlier today that the anticipated next version of Windows will go on sale on October 22, 2009. Mark your calendars!

Quote:
Microsoft confirmed today that the next version of its operating system, Windows 7, will launch October 22. Rumors swirling since April hinted at an October release date, as opposed to the original release plan of January 2010, but nothing had been confirmed by the Redmond, WA, company until today. The last version of Windows, Vista, debuted less than three years ago to mixed reviews. Windows 7 may be part of the attempt by Microsoft to overcome the difficulties of Vista. Those eager to try out the new system can test it before it launches and decide for themselves.

Not from the Seattle paper. The Wall Street Journal also has the article and may have more information, but they require an access fee to read their complete stories, and I didn't want to pay them.

What about the upgrade coupon option thingy? I've seen reports of June 28th... Can anyone comment?

Oh man an upgrade would be awesome. Please more info.

All the info I've found on it is old. For instance, according to this article and a few more based on the same information, the upgrade coupons start being released July 1. However, the article was written in January, so I can't say how accurate it is.

Well, I just found out some brand new info on this. A guy on the Notebook Review forums posted that the Win 7 Upgrade Program is valid starting June 26th. This info was included with a replacement unit he got from Asus, which means that at least one major manufacturer is starting the program then. This leads me to believe that they'll all likely start at the same time. Here's the thread, if you want to see photographic evidence: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=386544

I personally believe that Asus is jumping the gun for marketing purposes. European news believe that all systems shipped, starting 1stJully09 will come with an upgrade certificate.

The free upgrade is limited to Vista Home Premium, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. A jump from 32 to 64bits version will not be free. Question is still what to do with Vista Home Basic.

could be - it's only a few days ahead of the other rumors regardless.

I dont know about other manufacturers but as it is Dell lets you switch from 32-bit to 64-bit for free (because the license is for that version of Windows, and not architecture-specficic), you just have to call them up and ask them for the appropriate disc

Is this still holding true after one uses the 32bits system for say 3 months, then turning in the upgrade to W7 64bits when it comes out?

i dont know what theyll do about upgrade program, but with Dell you can switch 32-bit/64-bit at any time as long as youre in warranty (wich is when they can send you the discs)

id assume the same rules apply for Windows 7 as well

This is a good piece of information. Let's hope that OEM vendors can be clear of the upgrade path time frame and option.

Asus is more picky on that. You'd have to upgrade to whichever version the notebook came with.

Noted also that W7 Starter Edition (SE) will be removed from the constraint of just running 3 apps in parallels.

Some options will still be limited:

"that Windows 7 Starter still includes only a subset of the features offered in the higher editions of Windows 7 such as Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and above. Windows 7 Starter does not include:

* Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
* Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
* The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
* Multi-monitor support.
* DVD playback.
* Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
* Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
* Domain support for business customers.
* XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7."
