Aspire 5100 CD/DVD not recognized

I went to rip a CD and it didn't work, so I did some investigating and found that the CD/DVD isn't even showing up. It has worked in the past and no changes have been made to the system. Any ideas?

You think? It was just replaced about 4 months ago under warranty. Are there any other possibilities?

That model is plagued with mainboard problems. Must have been a design flaw. Countless others have preceeded you on this board

yep, do a search on it and you will find lots of similar threads. apparently the southbridge on the board fails taking out the ide, usb, and ps2 controllers.

with the unit off, on a hard flat surface.

press down on the unit with the palm of your hand just left of the touchpad. press firmly but not hard enough to break everything.

power the unit and check the bios, do you see the optical drive? a temporary fix and will not work as soon as you start moving the laptop around.

Thankfully it's still under the extended warranty. This computer is junk.
