Toshiba Update Utility - how to use ?

Thread Starter
I have a Satellite 5105-S702 laptop that I purchased in 2002, and subsequently had the Motherboard & Graphics Card replaced by a new Motherboard & Graphics Card of the equivalent European model, the Satellite 5100-603.

I tried to reinstall Win XP Pro using the Recovery CDs that were supplied with the 5105-S702, but was blocked at the start of the recovery process, with a message to the effect that the product key was not valid. Was advised that this happened because the new motherboard does not have the correct DMI string, and that to correct this I would have to download and run the Toshiba DMI Update Utility for the 5105-S702.

I have downloaded the Toshiba DMI Update Utility for the 5105-S702, and would appreciate if someone would advise me on the exact procedure for running the utilty.

Thank you

From Toshiba direct:

"Please verify that you are using the correct CDs for your computer. The CDs that shipped with a computer can only be used on that computer and not another model even with a similar model number. For example, you can not use Satellite 1800 CDs on a Satellite 1805, also you can not use Tecra 8100 CDs on another Tecra 8100 if the two Tecras have different part numbers.

If you're sure you're using the correct CDs, then you can download the Toshiba DMI Update Utility for Notebook PCs . The DMI Update Utility will allow you to restore your model's identification information (DMI strings) so you can restore the factory software.

Please note: The DMI Update utility must run from DOS boot media. The package you download will guide you through the process of creating the DOS boot media. To create the DMI utility boot disk, you'll need one of the following:

*
A bootable diskette (floppy) drive (FDD) and a blank diskette.
*
A bootable CD/DVD drive (CDR), access to a PC with CD writing capability, and a blank CD-r or CD-RW disk.

If you have a FDD, the FDD method is the simplest, most reliable method. If no FDD is available, the bootable CDR is your only option."

Good lucks!

Toshiba DMI Update Utility - how to use ?

Thank you very much for your reply.

However, I was hoping for a more detailed procedure for using the DMI Update Utility than is given in the Toshiba Support Bulletin that you have quoted from, which assumes a level of computer competence that I wish I had.

You need :

. A bootable diskette (floppy) drive (FDD) and a blank diskette. This is your floppy drive or an external usb floppy drive and a 1.44 floppy diskette

or:

. A bootable CD/DVD drive (CDR), access to a PC with CD writing capability, and a blank CD-r or CD-RW disk. This is your internal optical drive or an external usb optical drive and a blank CD

Start the application and follow the instruction to create a bootable DMI utility. Then you reboot your notebook from this DMI diskette or CD and follow the instruction as how to update your notebook.

Toshiba DMI Update Utility - how to use ?

qhn

You say "Start the application and follow the instruction to create a bootable DMI utility". Which application ? Is the DMI Update Utility file "toshdmi10.exe", that I downloaded from the Toshiba Notebook PC webpage (
http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSu...2284&stateId=1 0 82380629 ), the application you are referring to ?

I'm running my laptop on Win XP Pro SP3. Can I create a bootable floppy diskette by inserting one in my external FDD drive, opening the format dialog box and checking the "Create an MS-DOS Startup Diskette" ?

Thanks
