Asus G50Vt-X5 vs. HP Pavilion dv7t series

Hey there,

I am trying to decide what I should get between two laptops that I will get as a graduation present. To be honest, I am pretty much a total noob when it comes to laptops, so any advice would be welcome. My choices are between the Asus G50Vt-X5 or one of the HP Pavilion dv7t series laptops. My budget is around $1000.

I was at Best Buy the other day when I was shown the Asus for the first time and I really like how it looked and felt, much more than the overly glossiness of the HP laptops. However, I know HP has a pretty good reputation, as the rest of my family has HP's and they seem to run just fine.

Here are the specs for both:

http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33496181.html

Note: I used Cnet for the Asus laptop because Asus's own website kinda sucks for providing specs.

Truth be told, I like to game a little and would really like to be able to run Star Craft 2 (if that has any signifigance to you guys) when it finally comes out.

Also, I will be using this computer through college, so it's a school laptop as well.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Asus because it is so much more attractive than the HP, but I really don't know what to get and I know that looks aren't everything.

The bottom line: I need help choosing a laptop because I will have it for sometime and I just want to be sure I make the right choice.

Thanks,
Brian

For NBF reviews on both comparable models:

. Asus

. HP

Giving the right configuration on the HP it can really outperform the ASUS. You are in for a hard choice.

My choice would be with the HP with the QuadCore configuration and the HD 4650.

cheers ...

At your price point, I'd go for the Asus. To configure the HP to the point Q is talking about would cost significantly more than $1000.

And either one will be able to run Starcraft 2 fine.

FYI, Newegg is selling their G50 X6 for $ 1150.00 after the $ 100 mail in rebate along with free shipping. It may be out of your price range and you've probably already seen it, but it gives the Best Buy edition a run for the money in the "Most Bang for the Buck" category. That page also has over 70 user reviews, all of which are viewable.

Personally, I'd take Asus over HP due to their outstanding warranty, reviews I've read, and complaints I've seen relating to HP's overheating. Best of luck.

Thanks you guys,

Yeah, I saw that Asus on new egg and it looks like a good deal. My price range is around $1000, so I could probably get away with that.

I see Newegg removed the free shipping offer, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it again towards the end of the month.

Another thing to keep an eye on, Asus is about to launch the G50's successor, so we may see further discounts as the G51's launch and July draw near.

Finally, there is Microsoft's free Win 7 upgrade program on any Vista installed PC purchased between June 26 and January 31.

If you can delay your purchase at least until the 26, you'll be saving yourself the price of a brand new x64 OS.

To be honest, I don't even know what that Win 7 upgrade would do, but I should probably wait for the prices to drop as well.

Windows 7 is Microsoft's much needed and improved successor to Windows Vista. Its much faster, more efficient, and consumes fewer resources.

You can find the Asus g50vt-x5 on Ebay refurbished for cheap 777.77...It comes with a 90 day warranty through Asus and not some second hand insurance company...Thinking about buying one for my son actually.
