Sager NP9280 vs. new Alienware m17x

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, so please forgive me if I tread on familiar ground here. I’ve been doing a lot of research into powerful gaming laptops for my budget (around $2500) and I’m trying to decide between two machines, the Sager NP9280 and the new Alienware m17x. Alternatively, if there are any other brands or computers I should be looking at, please let me know as I am always open to more options.

Below are my custom configurations of the two computers. There is essentially no price difference between the two, so that is not a factor here. In terms of uses, I’m a pretty hardcore gamer so I want a powerful laptop that will be able to play recent games in high resolutions. I also do a lot of video editing and CG work in Maya.

Sager NP9280:

Core i7 Quad 920 2.66Ghz processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1GB, 6 GB DDR3 ram at 1066mhz, 320GB 7200rpm hard drive, 17 inch WUXGA screen, Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Microsoft Office Basic, 3 year warranty.

New Alienware m17x

Core 2 Duo T9600 2.8 Ghz processor, dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M, 2GB – SLI enabled, 4GB dual channel DDR3 ram at 1066mhz, 320GB 7200rpm hard drive, 17 inch WUXGA screen, Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 3 year warranty.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but it seems that the Alienware has a more powerful GPU and Sager’s only advantage over the Alienware is the much better CPU and more RAM. Also, I’ve never heard of Sager, so I’m wondering if Alienware might be a better buy in terms of build quality and customer service? The big question is whether the i7 processor in the Sager is worth sacrificing the more powerful GPU and some other features of the Alienware?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forums.

My best suggestion would be to wait. We have a few members in the Sager Section who have ordered the new NP9280. In fact, one person will be receiving it today. And the reviews for the new m17x wont be out for a few weeks. If you want to see which performs better, it's just a matter of waiting.

Right now the Alienware has the reported GPU advantage for gaming. But have any been delivered? Alienware has screwed the pooch on more than one occasion. Usually insufficient thermal capabilities. They used to make the most powerful 15.4 but it over heated.

On you not being familiar with Sager? Says more about Alienware marketing than their R&D. I suspect that by the time Alienware is actually delivering those 280m SLI Sager will have the same.

As said above if you want SLI wait. If I seem like I don't like Alienware? I don't. Over priced flawed systems. If Sager did not offer SLI in the 9280 trust me a reason. They have a far better reputation than Alienware for uber systems.

It is really all about CPU or SLI. The i7 CPU will be better suited to number crunching vs any notebook CPU. 2 GPUs are better for gaming. You have to decide which you need more.

Good thing I saw this thread. I was abut to buy a M17x.

Those specs for the Sager are amazing, but no SLI. Still a powerful machine regardless.

I never owned a Sager... anyaways is there where I order it from?

I know Xotic and like them a lot. I also think powernotebooks is great. Others I just don't know so no comment. Xotic or PNB or the best for so many reasons.

PC Torque is a regular here on NBF, so if you buy from them, you'll likely be able to easily reach them for any tech support or issues.
