Acer Aspire One SSD vs ATA Drive

I'm about to buy one of these for trips. The SSD drive would be big enough for my needs but I'm hearing they are real slow. My experience with other SS storage devices would seem to confirm this. Any experience out there with speed issues on these solid state hard drives?

Thanks!

Not that I am aware of. Seems like everyone nowadays wanting to swap the HDD out for the SSD. Cost is holding them back.

the ssd's on the aspire one are pretty slow. They are ok if you are running linux, but if it comes loaded with windows it is painfully slow.

OK, then the next question would be how's the version of Linux that comes on the Aspire One? I use Ubuntu on another laptop and it's great, so I could deal with Linux if it worked that well.

indeed. slow write speeds cause the unit to appear to lock up.

the netbook version of ubuntu is ok. the full fledge install does run a little slow.

Now I know why I have reservation for netbooks that come with SSD. Always felt that it does not have enough storage, never suspected the slowness of the SSD.

I thought my Samsung NC10 was cheap for using "normal" 160gb drive

I'm suddenly convinced!

Wow, that second URL did the job for me. I was considering the SSD with trepidations, but I will not consider it any more. I was thinking about durability for a knockaround travel rig, but hey, I have yet to actually disable a regular laptop hard drive from rough handling.

Thanks so much for that very helpful piece!
