spilled iced tea in HP Compaq 8510p

around a month ago i spilled some iced tea in my laptop. first i thought it was gone, but then i dried it out and it mostly works. i turned it on within the 24 hour period, but it mostly works.

it boots up and i can install the OS. problem is that whenever i move the touchpad it's like the left mouse button is always clicked and it's a constant select on everything i scroll over. i tried replacing the touchpad and using only a USB mouse but it doesn't work.

new touchpad does the same thing and USB mouse won't work in the OS. it will work during installing the OS, but once in the OS it stops working.

any advice on a cheap fix other than replacing the system board?

Have you tried updating the touch pad driver? The USB host controller? Might want to check the ribbon cable that connects the touch pad to the board again.

even when you install windows from the DVD it's still a constant left button click which makes me think it's a hardware issue.

i found a touchpad on ebay for $20 and bought it to try. same exact problem as with the original one

I would physically check where the connector to the board situates and try cleaning it with diluted alcohol and see.

This would do, no need for dilution. Just don't flood it

thx for your help

cleaned it yesterday and it worked for for about 90 minutes this morning. reinstalled Vista and was in the middle of installing my apps when the mouse started acting up again.

one difference was that the USB port worked while the mouse was acting up. shut it down and will try again later. maybe when it gets hot there is liquid somewhere and it's shorting out.

Yep. But it seems like that you are going about the right direction. Q-tips and alcohol again

Hope to see that you'll get more than 90min eventually.

you're in germany?

wife has the 16GB 3G, while not perfect I think it's the best cell phone out there.

I will be heading back to Hamburg next week. That is where my company bases. At home in SoCal for personal leave at the moment.

I currently use an Omnia.

You can input on the new iPhone here:

when i was in the US army in italy, we used to go to germany once or twice a year for training

We have good bases in Germany. A family member is waiting for the request to base in Ramstein to be approved, taking a leave from Lackland.

(time to prep to head back to SoCal for me )
