i ram memtest, in 9 different windows all testend different ammounts of ram. and it came back 0 errors. um. yah i swaped the sticks around. but i have not changed them with a different set yet.

i re applied the AC5, i did it more carefully this time, i also re seated my ram, vid cards and prcessor.... i also removed the cmos battery to do a hard shut down. and i hope that will get out any bugs, but my laptop still gets the BSOD every time i enable SLI... sucks!

Did you try first getting into Windows and then enable SLI? Driver up to date? Try different drivers?

Hello Majictoast, I am sorry to read you are experiencing this issue. Have you run CHKDSK for any errors?
When a system shuts down like this, it could because of overheating. Can you turn it back on right away when
this happens? Have you tried cleaning out your fans/vents/PSU? If there is a voltage problem; the other step
would be to remove the internal components and see how the system behaves with barebones setup.

You will want to contact AW Support so we can help you with that or visit My Hive via our AW Support site.

One more step you may want to try is to disable automatic restarts in the event of a system crash to reveal the "BSOD" which may contain enlightening diagnostic information. You can find step-by-step directions for that here: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=59116#T.3

Have a good day!

I know this is a dead thread, but maybe someone is listening...

I have exactly the same problem with my Alienware Area-51 M9750 laptop - random power down - instant shutdown with no warning.

This has only happened twice during the last couple of weeks. Last night it happened again and again and again. This time, I removed the cover to check the graphics cards, CPU, memory etc. I removed both hard drives completely, removed the memory, and repositioned the memory, and removed the battery. With the memory removed, the PC was powering up then shutting down then powering up again by itself, etc. I don't know whether that's usual or not. There were no beeps from the POST at any stage, I'm not sure if portables have a beeper or not.

The PC was powering up and then a few seconds later powering down again. Sometimes it didn't even get through the POST. Sometimes it happened when sitting idle in the BIOS screens. Sometimes I was able to get part way through booting Vista or Linux. Mostly, it was instant shutdown a few seconds after power-up. Today, the PC has been on all day, and only shutdown once about 1/2 hour ago.

The graphics cards are cool, the CPU is cool, Fans are working, and memory checks out fine with memtest 86+.

I was beginning to suspect a faulty power switch, but I'm doubting that now because it is so random.

The battery is fully charged, and the power supply is OK as far as I can tell.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would try with another power supply though, reading a few posts here regarding this un-explained shutting down problem

As I said the battery was fully charged so that should have held it up. There was no sign of the power LED going out either. However, I will give that a go when I get home - I'm currently working away for the next few weeks.

I must also add that I've recently bought two memory modules from Crucial. I'll try refitting the old modules when I get home.

Cheers.
