Stuck on Vista Progess Bar

Hope someone can help me with this:

I have no clue what is causing this but for the past two weeks whenever I start up my computer it hangs at the Vista progress bar. After a couple tries I can get into safe mode which really doesn't do anything for me.

Earlier I was able to get Vista to start...but now no matter what I do I get hung up on the Vista progress bar. I believe my system is in my signature.

May not be the same problem but I had a similar issue a few weeks ago. I would let it sit and after ten minutes it would finally start up OK. After several hours of uninstalling hardware I narrowed the problem down to a USB pen drive I had plugged into the rear USB port. Sounds dumb I know but as soon as I pulled it out problem went away. This may be completely unrelated and unhelpful, if so sorry!

That's what is troubling me, I have nothing crazy plugged in, haven't installed any new hardware recently. And if I just let the status bar go...it will stay there indefinitely. One time I waited forty five minutes, got frustrated, shut down and started the process over again. The problem has compounded now...after ONE good boot to windows it will go back to stalling at the progress bar. In recent weeks a good boot to windows would mean that I was 'safe' for a couple days.

Thanks for the help, hope more comes my way before I have to think about recovering.

Hi officernick2003, can you boot into Safe Mode? Try to run chkdsk with command prompt in recovery mode for system errors:
How can I run a ScanDisk (Check Disk) in Windows Vista?
.

If it is the video card, from safe mode, uninstall/reinstall the video drivers.

A last step that may help is running Vista's startup repair. Startup Repair is a Vista recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Vista from starting correctly. When you run Startup Repair, it scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly:
Start-up Repair

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for those assists, I will try them. However, I'm not sure about uninstalling the drivers...I'm currently in Iraq and have no way of re-installing the drivers once they are gone.

Download DriverMax (or something similar). This would help you in backing up all your comp's drivers to be used later.

cheers ...
