XP Browser windows do not display Website backgrounds.

On one of our office laptops (Compaq Presario) will not display any Website's background, whether it's some sort of a gif or just a color. It's the same with either Firefox or IE, so it's the computer, not the browser. Everything else is there; just no background. I've opened the same Web sites on our other office computers (all WP-Pro and one Linux Ubuntu) and they all work fine. Any ideas why this might be happening? It makes some Web pages unreadable and all of them unattractive!

Thank you!

I take it that this comp has the same setup as the others?

What OS does this one have? What have you tried so far?

The OS is XP-Pro. The only thing I've tried is to eliminate any restrictions in the tools of both IE and Firefox. Didn't change anything. In addition to not displaying backgrounds of Web sites, sometimes there are buttons or other features of a Web page missing that will appear on any of our other computers. I'm beginning to feel that a new OS install is in order? What part of Windows has any effect on what will and won't load in a Web page? This is a new one on me . . .

I would try first updating OS, drivers and browser related utilities like Java, Flash, ActiveX. Then try also reinstalling the browsers and in case of IE, go to IE8

Did a repair re-install of XP, re-installed the drivers, got the latest Flash and Java updates and activated ActiveX. Same problem. Just the background from every Web page is missing, which on most is not an issue, but if the background color is needed for the necessary contrast to read the text, the page is useless.

I've created some test Web pages using different backgrounds and ways of placing them, and it's still the same result on this laptop.

I am stumped on this. Are you using XP just as stock at the moment? Any 3rd party apps running loose somewhere? Proxy?

This is the generic notebook that gets used for email and day-to-day Internet stuff. I's running XP Home and has few apps running on it at all. I'm thinking I should just reformat the HD and start over. All the data is on a separate partition so it wouldn't be a big deal. Then if it did it again, it's outa here! Generic notebooks are cheap enough now that they can be replaced with little concern about investment!

Yep. But it is funny that only 1 out of the 4 that you have. Clone it and get over it (?)
