HP DV7 2015tx - quick question: upgrading CPU

Hi, I am about to purchase the HP DV7 2015tx, with the q9000 cpu.

I am happy with everything, except the potential future performance of the CPU. The only remaining question for me is whether it is possible to upgrade the CPU to say, a q9550 if in future I am not happy with the speed of the q9000. I'm afraid I don't know the motherboard type or what it supports.

Also, if it is possible, might this create heat issues or like instability?

Any help appreciated,

M

The Q9550 is a desktop CPU and will not physically fit. If it did yes you would have thermal issues. Your options at this point are Q9100 2.26Ghz or QX9300 2.53Ghz.

thank you powerpack, the QX9300 sounds like the next logical step, when and if I need it

does this have any impact on warranty, etc? would I have to get HP or the local supplier to do this for me to preserve it?

HP likely would tell you it would void the warranty. Even if it should not. Also if they do void your warranty kind of hard to fight as going to court is more time money and effort than would be worth. Call them and ask. Some companies are more friendly to upgrades I do not recall HP being one of them.

What do you do with this notebook? Have you considered a higher clocked dual core might give better real world performance and less thermal stress?

Oh and when you get it, look into fsb OC. It does not raise temps much because you are not changing voltage. You should be able to get from 300Mhz to 500Mhz per core. Nice thing about this is myself for example don't OC when I am on the forum for example. I only do when I want the extra performance. Contrary to what many believe OC'ing CPU and GPU can be done safely as long as you monitor temps should not have any problems. Oh and it is free.

Good luck.

Good info again pp.

I was wondering about OCing possibilities actually, I will certainly look into it, although I know that someone with a similar model (I think it was the 2040) had mentioned some problems with doing so.

The notebook is one I intend to keep for years, 3-5 probably, so it must be futureproofed to some extent, hence the QC requirement, I think that in future I would regret having purchased a DC, so will not now.

For the immediate future, there are a couple of things I would like it capable of handling, one being a game that I know is CPU intensive, so after testing that out, I'll know whether this is sufficient or not. (I have tried to research the requirements for the programs I need, however requirements and what constitutes 'satisfactory' performance varies from person to person, system to system)
