Lifebook E2010 - Confused bout RAM ...

Hi there. I bought 2x512 modules of RAM to upgrade, i have 2x256 installed. But when i insert the new modules i get the 1-3-3-1 beep code, that has something to do with RAM, i found it after some googling. The laptop manual said i should buy pc2100 modules, so i did. So why wont it work? After checking the 2x256 modules i had previously installed, they were named pc2100S. Anyone know what the "S" means? The manual didnt say anything bout the "S"....Am i screwed with these new modules?

PS. My laptop is a Lifebook E2010

Not so clear about the "S" part, but these ram modules are being used in many Dell notebooks and on some HPs.

Return them for a normal PC2100 module.

Hi, and thx for reply. The 256 modules i had in the laptop were the ones with the "S" (PC2100S), and the new 512 ones are PC2100. I played around abit by leaving one 256 module in, and adding one of the new 512 modules. Laptop started then, BIOS would not recognize the 512 module, only presented 256 mb RAM. However, when i continued to boot to Win XP, i ran CPU-Z, and it said i had 768 mb RAM installed, and recognized the 512 module in slot#1, but Windows only presented 256 Confusing.... especialy since Fujitsu say i should use this memory that i bought...

I got this:

What does your BIOS say for the amount of ram? Might want to see if you have a newer BIOS version made available for your model?

Hi again. My BIOS wouldnt recognize the 512 module, only the 256 module, when i tried erlier. With both new 512 modules installed, i get the beepcode and no boot, not even able to get into BIOS, since the screen is black. Ive been searching the entire evening for BIOS updates, but i have the latest one installed already, dated Jan 3 2004, according to Fujitsu website. So i cant even change memory frequencies, timings etc in BIOS. I guess my hope is that they release an updated BIOS... Hope i have better luck tomorrow

PS. The max amount of RAM possible for this laptop is 1 gig.

If the BIOS is up to date (however old that is) then it is the ram module(s) that can be defect. I would try another set first.

But check your ram slots again, making sure that they are clean and not damaged. Swap the modules around and test.

I also tried with a 1 gig module, no luck with that either.... Im starting to think it has something to do with the fact that my old modules have the "S" in the name, though ive been vacuuming the internet for an explanation bout that, and come up empty handed. I find it hard to believe that the 1 gig module, and the two 512 gig modules are faulty, since they are brand new. I dunno what to do bout dirty connectors and such, since the connectors apparently work when i insert my old modules. I hope someone can help me with either how to find update for BIOS, or figure out what the "S" model really means.

Thx

Would you want to give the people in the link above a shot and see if their ram modules work? Mail them for query about the S and see.

Received this reply when asking Kingston about the "S" issue:

"PC2100S is a part number naming convention used by some memory manufacturers, which is not a standardized rating of speed."

Hard to get a hold of those i believe, so i guess my next step is to try finding a BIOS update somewhere.

Thanx for the replies
