Some noob Questions?

Thread Starter
First off let me say THANK YOU, To the people who have helped me (the noob) out.But now that ive got my laptop going again,I would like to play some games on it. PS3 died. Anyway,As i understand it the HP DV9317cl doesnt actually have a Graphics Card;It has a chipset? So does that mean im drawing my graphic processing off the cpu? Does it work kind of like an emulator? Ive went to other sites like overclockers,guru3d But those sites deal with tower type computers. Thought id come here and ask the EXPERTS,before i do anything dumb.Anyway Im not trying to set a land speed record i just want to play some games. When i went to the 3DMARK site and ran the game tester (Smaller version of 3dmark i assume) my system barely made it to minimum. I got Nvidia System tools and got this info from the start. And i couldnt tell you what 1/2 of it is.Im just a dumb a** BRICKLAYER. So if u got a Heart help a man out PLEASE.

Good to see you back and don't feel bad thats a lot of info and I'm not sure I could decipher half of it. To asnwere you question about video cards, it doesnt have one like you would think of one in a desktop but it does have one. Apears that you have a GeForce Go 6150 witch is a little on the lower end side but better then an integrated GPU(graphics processing unit). It does share your system memory and that looks to be only 512Mb. A good option if you want to get more out of the machine would be to add more memory. Looks like it uses PC4200, I don't know how much at this point I am still looking but heres how:

Good info... Wuld "Ready Boost " be an option or is that just a bs program.I mean i could get another usb thumb drive (4GB).Got a 512mb on now. Dont seem to help much.I also have an external HDD (250gb seagate Freeagent go) can i utalize that in some way.already tried it w/ ready boost and got a message stateing that the design characteristics were not compliant....or some thing like that.I think its because it a phisical hard drive and not a chip.BUT THATS WHY IM HERE ASKING QUESTIONS!!!!I did see an option to for mapping network drive....again i am not sure.could i map the drive to a file for memory? probably doesnt work like that though.. Thanks again...............

I am definitely not the one to ask about "ready boost" and other theoretical performance boosts. I like to concentrate on the physical performance. There may be a way to do what you say and get performance but I don't know the answer. What I do know is you can get 2Gb or ram for you machine for around $30 and that would make a huge difference.

No that wont work, sorry thats my fault. What you have there is desktop memory you need laptop memory, I forgot to explain that.

Try something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146517
This suggestion involves replacing the one chip you have with these two(there should be two slots(good idea to open up your machine and see whats in there, just fallow the link I gave you earlier)). It is a dual channel kit, better then mismatched pairs. So you would end up with a total of 2Gb ram.

On a side note Newegg.com is my favorite place to get computer and for that matter any electronics. Supper reliable ships fast amazing customer service! I have bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff from them and not one hiccup.

Thanks again.....So it's basically a plug n play ordeal.right?

For the most part. Just be very careful with the memory chips. Don't touch the silicon(black chips on the PC board) memory chips. Hold them by the edges. Also touch something metal on the computer(to discharge any static) before touching anything else, should be some once you open up the door on the bottom.

I also have not found a maximum for your specific machine anywhere yet. But I don't see why it would be any lower than 2Gb's

To be honest its supper easy to upgrade memory, you shouldn't have any trouble. If you do just ask, good luck!
