Dell Inspiron 2200 won't log in right...

  • I have a Dell Inspiron 2200, Windows XP, about 4-5 years old (2005), but works for me. The thing is, I went to boot up and it said I need to log in. That's not a problem, except there's only one profile and I didn't log out. The real problem is that when I click "log in" it logs me in, it flashes the background and logs me back out. This is NOT a password problem.
  • I'm pretty sure I know what caused the problem - my stupid behavior. Instead of doing the smart thing (I was tired) I searched for "AOL," all files. And I deleted everything I could. THEN, I got smart and decided to uninstall it (strangely enough, it worked...).
  • Anyone know how to get it back on if I can't get it to do anything?

Also, should I just get a new laptop. I'm kind've attached to it, and it has Microsoft Works (we all know how expensive that is...). Everything else I can probably replace.

No one? I don't have the money to buy a new laptop right now, I really need this thing fixed...

No, I haven't tried. *looks through* It's not a password problem. There never was, and it doesn't ask for, a password.

The fact that it asked for you to log-in, meaning something triggers the password query.

What happens when you try to get into Safe-Mode?

*by the way, never edit your original post once you receive feedback. Just normal forum etiquette, you could make subsequent input looking foolish*

You can always take the easy route and Format - Reinstall the OS.

How? I never made a back-up and I don't have a CD for the initial set-up. (Remember, it's about five years old)

Well, I did what you said... and it didn't work... it just put me back to the log in screen. Okay, I'll try safe mode, if I can. I'm accessing the internet from the college library so I can't really do it right now.

Safe mode didn't work either. *sigh* I'm starting to think I'll never get this thing fixed...

I guess that you just have to bite the bullet and perform a clean install. Borrow any installation disks for your system and go for it.

Man... And I have Microsoft Office and a ton of schoolwork and whatnot on there. Practically my entire life...

How about a repair first? This way you still be able to keep all the apps and personal data.

I don't have any money.

I meant a repair installation - put in the installation CD and choose the repair option on the menu.

Okay, I can't seem to find a way to fix it. . . Except to get a new OS disk, which I won't pay for.

If you search the internet you can find what your looking for

a Dell OEM install disk.

Once you get it, do a install and as long as you do not format the drive all your saved files will be there.

Alternatively you can remove the drive from the laptop - use an external drive case and pull the files you need off it using another computer

Oh thank god! I thought I was going to lose everything, including the Microsoft Windows Office, which is the most expensive thing on there. . . And thanks for the name of the product I need, it saves me a bit of time to figure out what the exact item is.
