Is that on the disk or is it a "current" option on the original laptop on start?
when you boot off the disk one of the options is to do a recovery

if it works it should boot up and work as before

if it does not work you will have to do a installation and you should be able recover your saved files but you would still have to install MSOffice again.

*sigh* I've already used all three of the available uses for software for Office... I don't get how it would keep my saved files, yet I'll have to reinstall Office?

i am referring to your saved documents would still be there

The Office software itself would require an install again.

MS Office should still be able to be activated - you may have to call them if you have issue and explain the OS has to be reinstalled

Okay. Thanks. I'll do that once I find someone who still has their XP disk.

You don't by chance still have the recovery partition on your hard drive do you?

I've looked, and the closest to that I could find was "debugging mode" which did nothing at all.

Have you tried pressing the F12 button when you power on the laptop (and see the DELL logo on he screen)

if your recovery partition is still there it will bring you into a Dell Diagnostics screen

*sigh* I ran the diagnostics test, but at about 80% through (this took several hours by this point) my battery pooped out since my charger is screwy and decides to not stay charged when I most need it to be.

Back to step one ... fixing the charging system first? Several hours for a diagnostic test is not a good sign.

cheers ...

Ehh... I go through those chargers like a kid goes through toys. Also, my computer has LOTS of files, a lot of which need to be deleted, plus it's a 2005 computer.
