Thanks for the link in your post above this one. This doesn't look good for me. Has there been any success stories by reinstalling the GPU?

Hit and miss. I dug some more, and found out

. that gpu driver would work under Vista and not XP (?),
. and sometimes reinstalling the OS with the wireless driver at the very last,
. and sometimes reset the BIOS by removing and replacing the CMOS battery ...

:-( HP should step up to the plate and just make this clean. Charge it as part of their advertising campaign, promoting good services. Probably costing them less. Oh well.

One thing left me wondering. With all the blogs and forums that I read, not a single post mentioned anything about trying with another wifi card (?) replacing the one that was in the comps.

I read a few posts about switching the card with no success. My biggest worry is that the whole laptop will just die. I can deal with using a USB adapter. Is this just the beginning of the end for my laptop?

Other than the wireless card issue, nothing I read said for sure that the comp would "die". Well with age, all notebooks probably will break down one way or another.

Thanks again for all your help ghn. That makes me feel a little better. I will just stick to the USB adapter (HP should send a FREE one to everyone who has this issue.) Maybe HP will find a solution. I did read that there is a lawsuit going on in Australia . I will never buy another HP/Compaq again.

Other manufacturers at one time or another went and goes through the same thing as HP in this case. Different issues, but with the same outcome. That is to skate responsibility when it matters most.

I would recommend not letting one incident robbing you out of a possible good price/good performance machine in the future.

It has been a very informative and constructive discussion, allowing me to learn many new things.

cheers ...
