Compaq NX5000 boot off CD-ROM

How in the heck do you make this dang thing boot off the CD-ROM?

It keeps wanting to load the operating system, regardless if the Windows XP cd is in there or not. I've tried pressing F12, F10, F1. Changing the boot options to load the "Multibay" first then the hard disk. It even pops up asking me what I want to boot from; multibay or hard disk. Choosing the multibay does nothing, it still loads the operating system regardless.

How do I make it boot the CD-ROM? I just need to get Windows XP Pro reinstalled on this thing.

Silly question - does this XP disk start up on another pc/notebook?

That's not a silly question, actually it's one I kind of questioned myself. It should though, I would assume. Once I am done uploading the ~4Gb worth of data on my laptop, I'll test it out.

Thing is though, it doesn't even give me the option to boot from the CD-ROM; unless the Multibay option is the CD-ROM. In which case, I've tested other bootable operating system CDs (Ubuntu, CentOS) and neither one of those boot on the laptop either and I've used those CDs on other computers to install them so I know they work.

Have you looked at the support site and documentation here?

Honestly. No. I did a quick Google search and decided to just come here for answers after that failed. I'm just helping a friend out who wants Windows XP reinstalled on his computer since it's in pretty bad shape. Didn't really have the time to do it, but I told him I'd do it for him anyway. Not knowing that it's not as simple as just backing up his old data, then just booting off the CD-ROM to reinstall Windows. Should have taken no more than ~4 hours (he had a lot of data to backup) and it's taken well over a few days now, mostly just me finding the time to mess with it.

I'll take a look at that documentation though. Thanks.

edit
I looked over those documentations and it didn't mention anywhere about how to install a fresh, clean retail version of Windows XP onto the computer. It's possible I over looked it, but every mention of it talking about installing Windows Retail, it just advised against it. Didn't give any steps of how. Nor did it say anything about how to boot directly off a CD-ROM. Why is this so difficult?

Found this

Spoke also to another business notebook owner, and she confirms that you should be able to boot up from the multibay optical drive.

Thanks. Then maybe something might be wrong with the cd-rom drive perhaps.

Likely, I would check it out thoroughly first though. Good lucks.

I just can't seem to get this thing to boot off the CD-ROM to save my life... and under ubuntu I can't seem to figure out how to test the cd-rom to see if it even works either.

Just a suggestion - take the optical drive off, install it in an external (USB) housing and test it. That is how I do with many of my devices

iam probably late on this one but. whats probably is happening is that the NX5000 uses a optical drive interface. Take out the cd-rom look at the back it has a board on it, that is known to go bad. Get one off ebay, or part supplier.

Does the laptop you are trying to fix have XP on it now and was that the OS that it came with.If so, .Is it possible to do a system restore...and just eliminate the bloatware..regardless once the install is done there will be 3 SPs and about a million updates...lol
