Samsung Omnia 2

Thread Starter
oh la la, now I am torn between the iPhone 3G/S and this Omina II aka i8000 (note that they plug in another "0" at the end )

"Samsung Omnia II now official: AMOLED touchscreen with TouchWiz 2.0 destined for Verizon"

"Although not exactly the best kept secret (we first caught wind last week), Samsung's Verizon-bound Omnia II / I8000 is now one hundred percent official, along with even more official US confirmations for the Omnia Pro B760 (Louvre) slider, Omnia Pro B7320 candybar, and the Omnia Lite B7300. Specs for the Omnia II are just a little different than what we previously heard: 3.7-inch AMOLED resistive touchscreen with WVGA (480 x 800) resolution, EVDO Rev A, 5 megapixel camera, 720 x 480 at 30fps video recording, 2GB to 16GB internal storage with microSD expansion slot, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, AGPS, and TouchWiz 2.0 UI. As for the Lite, we're looking at HSDPA, WiFi, 3 megapixel camera, AGPS, and just as the name suggests, a good likelihood it'll be overshadowed by its more feature-rich brother.

Update: We can't say it's entirely unexpected, but just to be clear, Omnia II buyers shouldn't worry about living in the past. Yahoo! Tech reports its WinMo 6.1 underbelly will be later upgradeable to 6.5."

Source!

This is the B7610 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqqMb...eature=related

Those AOMLED screen's look really nice, really laggy changing from portrait to landscape though,I guess it is a pre-prod unit of sort's.

Have you tried WM6.5 qhn?,can't say it does much for me,but then I love living in the past

Nope. Trying to get a hand on that WM6.5 version at the moment. Don't tell me you have the new Omnia already

Hehe,no I don't,would want to see snappier performance from that samsung before considering buying one, nice screen or not,it should be very fast with the samsung/powerVR hardware spec, which it doesn't look from that quick clip, which is probably not fair to judge it from anyway.

I've only tried a couple of different 6.5 build's on my diamond hoping to see a speed improvement, actually seemed worse [what a surprise] along with some associated bug's you would expect from beta type rom's,on a device the rom wasn't optimized for.I can't understand why they are worrying about look's and UI,when their main concern should be WM's complete lack of speed compared to their own 5 year old devices and their competitor's offering's.

I prefer stylus's and hardware button's,but if I was a touchy feely person would personally go for something that had a capacitive screen and an OS designed from the ground up for touchy feelyness

I am debating of going back to stylus, having using PDA in the early days. The current Omnia offers a stylus that can be used in conjunction with touch, but after using it for a few weeks, my fingers are pretty much getting used to hit the right place on the screen.

So WM6.5 is not what one expects from a newer version? Sad to hear.

Anybody who like's using their digit's will definitely like WM6.5 more imo.

To me,the larger menu's in 6.5 make's for a lack of usable space without sliding this, scrolling that, swiping something else, which is "cool" until you realise it's taking 3 time's as long to get anywhere from the home screen....but I guess they can't do much else to make it so people don't have to pull out a stylus as often which is really my whole problem with it.
No doubt customization's will appear for people like me that like a today screen jammed with info and shortcut plugin's to everything they want to get to....and is impossible to use without a stylus

I've played a bit with my nephew's iphone, and the keyboard work's very well on it's capacitive screen, the resistive one's I spend almost as much time going backward's to correct mistake's as going forward using my finger

As an aside, the last 6.5 rom I tried was a 109mb rar file download and used up to 90% of available ram running nothing, hopefully the OEM installed version's are not like this, although given microsoft's recent philosophy of ram and storage not used running their OS's is ram and storage wasted....I'm not that hopeful.

For anyone interested in the new omnia (like myself) here is the review that popped up last week:
http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/Gadg...-OMNIA-HD.html
It seems Samsung worked around the limitations of a touchscreen by adding a feedback in form of short vibration that simulates click.

Can't wait. Who is the provider by the way? It is T-Mobile here in Hamburg.

bought it unlocked & unbranded, will have to go with AT&T since it is GSM.

Nice and clever. I have reservation about going with AT&T if I may saying. My unlocked GSM Omnia did not work too well when I was in San Anton. It kept losing connections. I had to get a cheapy Nokia (AT&T ding) in order to use the pre-paid AT&T card.

yeah, but it's either T-Mobile @ EDGE speeds or spotty ATT at sometimes 3G speeds.

For some reason T-Mobile decided to put their 3G on 1700MHz which is not supported on the i8910, or any other standard 3G phone.

I don't use T-Mobile so I am not sure. I notice that I only have issues when I am states-side. Even when I use my European provider and roaming via AT&T. I had better connection in So Cal with Cingular or Verizon roaming services though.

I'm really hoping that the omnia II is going to be a lot cheaper than the HD due to non capacitive screen[although higher res], non A8 cortex cpu and non HD recording....around 30% less would be nice

Look forward to your comment's on the HD MichelleG

Phone arena review of the Omnia II,look's like the busy touchwiz UI theatric's cost performance,no surprise really.
Seem's that the AMOLED screen's are not soo great in the sunlight according to other source's,but then I wouldn't rate anything I've owned as marvelous in the sun either.
I still like it,apart from a tethered stylus and the big button that could have been a D-pad that isn't a D-pad
