Smoked my V6000

Hi, Im new and need help.

I was on ebay yesterday and noticed a bit of smoke coming from the side of my laptop; then it turned itself off. It's a 2 year old Compaq Presario V6000TX CTO Notebook PC (GQ362AV). There is no visible sign of damage anywhere on the exterior of the laptop or battery. I custom ordered my laptop direct from compaq and luckly I did not get the bad battery.

HP basiclly told me Im ****ed, $398 to repair, basiclly the cost of new one. Same with Frys..

so why not take it apart then?

Bought an usb enclosure for the HD.. currently backing it up to my other external HD via my dad's computer..

From what I've read these heatsinks are notorious for causing a gap and overheating the chip..

Here's some pics, hopefully someone can tell me what I can save:

First off I need to replace this; the cause of random not charging:

Does this looked cooked? Intel!

Heatsink:

So do I need a new CPU and/or New Motherboard?

Currently I have the T2250:

436900-001 Intel Core Duo processor T5200 - 1.66GHz (Merom, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)
Cheapest mother board I have found is $123 shipped..

Hopefully its just the cpu cause then its just $56 to fix back the way it was:
Heatsink: $13
T2250: $15
Power jack: $28
Thanks!

It sure looks like that the CPU is "well done". But for it to be shorted like that means there is something wrong with the power input somewhere on the board.

Visually check the board real good for any burned marks and burned smell. Verify the AC Adapter and battery. If it is good, then I probably go with the CPU first.

Good lucks.

cheers ...

It was having issues with the power jack on the computer, it would only charge at certain angles. Starting to think it might have caused arcing or something.

Cool. Replace it then - now that you have the whole comp apart at your disposal. Cheap to replace the jack. How are you at soldering?

I bought the whole board for the jack and usb, plug and play FTW!

I also bought the wrong cpu.
But just ordered the correct one..

Also after cleaning the thermal paste off the old cpu that was all caked and nasty, noticed a small bubble in the edge of the metal piece where it touchs the heatsink, so it is most likely fried, but the motherboard looks fine after another look over..

Thanks, I ordered the Core 2 Duo T7200 - 2.0 GHz, 4 Mb, 677 MHz!

$80 for the T7200 vs $50 for the T5300, $30 is worth it!

Now whats the max ram this laptop will run?

Crucial says 2GB, is that serious?
