Alarm! Alert!

Just went through the source link in Steve's post. There is a description as how to get the early bird discount prices of $49 and $99, and the chance to win some coupon codes!

"It's not quite that simple, though: starting tomorrow, June 26, you'll be able to pre-order upgrades at much cheaper prices -- $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional, just as we'd heard -- but pre-orders will be strictly limited in number and are expected to sell out quickly. Obviously we'd prefer it if final pricing was $49 and $99 for everyone, but it's not a bad start, especially since participating manufacturers will be offering cheap / free upgrades to 7 on new computers sold after tomorrow with Vista as well.

Oh, and don't you worry about scoring a place in line, because we're here to help: later today we'll be giving away 100 codes that guarantee a pre-order spot at the discounted prices, and you'll be able to share the code with two friends. You'll have to act fast, though -- the codes will only be valid for 48 hours. Keep your eyes peeled for our recession antidote post around noon EST, and get your clicky-fingers ready.

Update: Looks lke we've got our first participating manufacturer -- HP machines sold after tomorrow will receive free upgrades to 7, and we're hearing Sony will announce a similar offer soon. We'll be keeping a full list of announcements as the day goes on, check back later for more.
"

Go get it gals/guys! Hurry!

Asus is starting their Windows 7 free upgrades on the 26th as well.

Also please note that Engadget's offer is just for the guaranteed chance to buy the upgrade at the discounted pre-order price.

Pre-orders! Get your Windows 7 Upgrade pre-orders here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy...pre-order.aspx (please note that you must be running or have an install disc for Windows XP or Windows Vista for the upgrade DVD to work)

I already got mine from Amazon. No waiting and no problems, and I didn't even win Engadget's contest!

take note of this, the scheme isdifferent from Vista's. 7's Pro has the Media Center function of Home Premium, whereas Vistas did not

Not so clear is the ability of running XP Virtual mode.

Current W7 RC allows XP virtual using Virtual PC Beta (not Virtual PC 2007). A comparison of the different W7 editions shows only Professional and above offering XP in virtualisation mode.

Question is if the Virtual PC Beta will be made to be an add-on for the Home Premium or exclusively for Pro and Ult.

no that was made clear when they announced it. Only Pro, (Enterprise), and Ultimate. others will have to install Virtual PC and buy an XP license to get that function.

Some restrictions (clarifications) applied :D

1. For large companies that plan to purchase a number of Vista PCs in bulk.

- Microsoft has limited the upgrade offer to a maximum of 25 PCs per organization. This must be noted that it was being raised from 5 to 25.

2. Systems bought before 26.June must go through a pre-order program (currently set to end this 11.July) since they are not qualified under the "mew" systems upgrade program.

3. Anyone else?

and the saga continues ...

MS to Offer 3-for-1 Win7 Deal: Report Suggests

"Price And Availability A Mystery

The two big questions with the Windows 7 scheme are how much it costs, and what people need to do to qualify.

As the scheme is not referred to in licensing agreements for any other editions, it appears to be exclusive to the Home Premium edition which is likely the most popular choice for families. Ed Bott of ZDNet predicts the pricing will be all-inclusive and cost at or just below the $199 Apple charges for its own family pack deals. (Source: zdnet.com)

If the deal is indeed all-inclusive, the wording of the agreement suggests users would be getting three copies of Windows 7 for a single fee. One person commenting on Kenney's blog complains that he's already pre-ordered three copies, having been unaware of the deal.

If Bott's prediction is correct, the commenter (who will have paid $150 at the reduced rate for pre-orders) will still come out ahead. But whatever the true situation, the confusing range of Windows 7 editions and the lack of clarity over pricing deals are continuing to leave buyers worried they might pay over the odds.
