RAM upgrade for Inspiron 6400

Thread Starter
I searched the forums, but haven't been able to get the info I need, which is . . .

1.) What is the maximum ram supported by Inspiron 6400? and what happens if I plugin more than this? currently I have 1g

2.) What type of ram do I get for Inspiron 6400? Which of the following are ok? will all work fine?
a.) SODIMM 1 GB PC-5300/667 MHz DDR2
b.) SODIMM 2 GB PC-5300/667 MHz DDR2
c.) Corsair 2GB DDR3 SODIMM (1066 MHz)

3.) Is this something I can do myself, the laptop I want to do this for is of course not new and has no warranty coverage from DELL anyway.

Would be very grateful if I could get answers to the above, thanks.

Your comp calls for 2GB max. Put in more "might" start but will not see more than 2. So the first option looks good.

You can swap out the ram modules yourself without voiding the warranty.

Any tricks to this? All the specs I see so far is calling for 2gigo max. Was I looking at a wrong model?

The specs on the E1705/9400 said the same thing about a 2 GB linit.

I tried it with my 6400 and it worked no problem.

Thanks for the info guys, have some more q's though . . .

Dave, What OS are you running on your Inspiron 6400?

Is it true that the it depends on the OS whether it can utilise more than 2g?

Also, How do I find out my RAM FSB? (667 or 533), my Inspiron 6400 is not exactly new and I can't find the specs sheet anywhere (pls don't laugh if this is a reaally stupid question, I really don't know how to tell the ram fsb)

Download CPU-Z and run it. It will tell a lot about your installed ram modules.

Some 32 Bits OS can utilize up 3.25gigo of ram. Only 64 BIts OS will take advantage of 4gigo and above.

I would just go with the 667 mhz memory, if you FSB is 533, then it will downclock and you will have a littel faster SPD timings

As far as OS I am running Win XP on the 6400 right now

Cool, that settles it. My 6400 also has XP.

4 gig 667 kit then, should make the switch in a couple of days, will tell you how it goes.

Thanks a ton guys!

On the Inspiron 6400 a 64bit OS will not overcome the 3.25GB Limitation. The chipset itself is limited to 32bit because of support for Intel's Core Duo series CPUs which are 32bit only.

^^ True. Hot dog, I kept forgetting about the chipset factor.
