Buying first laptop. Need advice

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. I will be leaving for college soon, and i am in need of a laptop to take with me. I don't want anything too fancy or expensive, just something that i can do homework, surf the web, and maybe watch some movies. Also i would like to not spend too much money, so i've been looking at laptops under $600. I don't really know that much about computers so i need some help.

Here is a link to one that i found that i think would fit my needs.

If you know anything about this laptop, your input would be greatly appreciated. Also if you know of any other laptops that are under $600 and fit the description above, feel free to share them with me. Thanks.

That's not a bad deal. Are you going to be watching movies on DVD? or streaming on the internet? If it's the ladder, I would suggest you look into a netbook.

Ditto, he could always get an extremely nice 12" netbook with excellent battery life, 6 cells. For college he would also need something that could last throughout an extended class and then some. Although netbooks aren't that powerful, in terms of graphics and multitasking (most are single core)... it will more than get the job done for college life

And who's to say you cannot get another laptop later down the road too

Stay away from netbooks, you can get a notebook for that money, and that way you can use it in many different ways. While you're in college, you'll use word processing, and notebooks are way advanced compared to netbooks. You have many different options, even though you're in the bottom end of the spectrum. Go to a Best Buy or similar store and touch/test/look at different laptops to see what brands you like and dislike, then shop for the best deal.
