M1330 high CPU usage with external monitor

Thread Starter
Hello,
Last week I bought a 22" LG W2261V external monitor for my dell m1330 with Nvidia 8400GS.
After about 10-20 minutes of viewing a HD movie my CPU usage burst to 95-100 % and won't go down unless I unplug the external monitor. I checked this with another external monitor and the result is the same.
BTW of course I view HD movies all the time before I bought this external monitor without any problem.

I tried with vista 32-bit and windows 7 64-bit but no good.

Any ideas?

I would look into updating the gpu driver first (long shot) and see if that helps.

Thanks ghn,
Thats the first thing I did.
I think that my case is similar to this case -

After reading all 5 pages of the link, it sounds like everything is pointed to the 8400 gpu series and the board. With the surrounding bad press and bad report of this nVidia graphic card, I can see the relation of it to your issue.

Saying that, my Sony SZ with this gpu, connecting to an external 23" Sun CRT, never gave me any issues up to today.

Let see if MrEvil can come by and shed some more light on this. In the mean time, can you try with different monitors and different cables? Not sure what this would make any differences though.

Thanks ghn,
I tried a HDMI and D-sub (RGB) cables and a 17" CRT monitor but no good...

Good. At least we can eliminate the causes due to external hardware (cables and different monitor types).

Have you tried contacting Dell yet?

Ok, let's see how they react to your post there. I would wait for MrEvil (or some other members) here in NBF first.

Thanks A LOT for your help.

this IS a weird problem. Technically, it shouldnt make any difference (in terms of GPU/CPU usage) where you're outputting the signal (ext monitor or internal LCD).

the only thing i can think of is that's the effect of DRM those MS c0cksuckers put into Vista. Any HD signal that's being outputted externally must be downsampled to lower quality to discourage pirating HD content. The downsampling WILL eat a lot of CPU time, thats for sure.

Try playback in Windows XP, preferrably without 1,000,000 service packs and patches.

That still does not make sense since it works on my Sony Vista sharing the same GPU as OP. And my other Vista notebook are doing fine as well, with different GPUs.

And as in the link given above, the issue was intermittent. I personally think that this is a hardware issue more than software/OS.

OK, I was visited by a dell technician and he replace the motherboard and processors.
I hope that this will help...
My 22" monitor goes now to the lab (yes.. it too..) and I'll update when it come back (2 weeks or so).
Thanks a lot for your help here! I have ZERO replies at the dell community site!
