i just want a GPU with DX10 capability in my E1705...

I'm not going to noob you out or anything...
i'd just like to know what my options are as far as putting any 8xxx or any ATI GPU that supports DX10 in my Inspiron E1705. I just put in a 7900GS a few days ago. i really like the performance boost as compared to my old X1400, but I have a sinking feeling in me that says that 7xxx is showing its age, especially with DX11 in the works.

basically, i'm willing to do anything. and i mean ANYTHING. i really don't want to have to go out and buy a new laptop, at least not before i know there is no other cheaper option for me as far as this model goes.
i was thinking of changing out the mobo with one that would open me up to other more recent GPU options?
the only options for this laptop at its current configuration are X1400, 7800 Go, 7800 GTX (Requires case mod), 7900GS, 7900 GTX (requires case mod), and the 7950 GTX (also requires case mod.)
there's also a couple of quadro cards, but i'm not too in to quadro.

any advice would be appreciated.

I believe you can drop a FX1600 GPU which is a DX10 card with minor mods - the same mod to add a dual pipe GPU such as the 7900GTX, 7950GTX, etc

really? im assuming it would require a BIOS flash, too huh?
that's a good idea, i think i'll try to look into that.
do you have any links as far as more info goes? if not, thats cool.

thanks very much.

I heard a while back that with the new inspiron revisions dell was supposed to release an 8600GT or GS option that would be compatible with the E1705. but most of my research on google has been overloaded with pointless info, but a few solid leads that suggest that it is possible. but then again, not solid enough to make it worth the risk.

EDIT: also, how well will the FX1600 perform in games? i know quadro cards aren't exactly made for gaming, but would it still perform well?
for example, in games like crysis, call of duty 4, etc?

I know for sure this card fits and works in the M1710

So it is very likley it will work in the E1705/9400 since they share the same GPU options

But search here someone must have tried it

And flashing the lastest BIOS is a good ideal

I myself had a FX2500 in my E1705, and a M1710

how well did the FX2500 play games? i play alot of games (crysis, as i mentioned), but im also working on my own game. my laptop is currently my developement rig, since i'm constantly taking the project on the move.

im thinking about it, and if it was a cheaper route, how about get a new motherboard that would support newer cards? i'm comfortable enough with this laptop to take it apart like that.

The Fx-2500 is the same card as the 7900GTX, The FX series cards have a differsnt BIOS on them, but were inter-changable with the 79xx series cards.

The FX1600 is pretty much the same as the 7900GX, except it has the dx10 capability.

Of coiurse to get DX 10 you will have to use Vista or the new WIndows 7, XP does not support DX 10 if I recall.

As far as playing games like Crysis your not going to get hi res with any 79xx series or the fx1600, FX2500 cards.

It maybe worth while to consider selling what you have and put the $$$ into a new laptop with a 9800 or better GPU in it.

Along with the M1730, Precison M6400 offerings with a Fast GPU, Gateway has a 17 inch gamer laptop for around $ 1100.00 with a much better GPU in it.

And all these newer laptops support Raid drives, Blu Ray, Faster CPU's and more memory.

So before you spend 4-5 hundred in upgrades check out the prices of new units or even check Dells Factory Outlet - you can find great deals at times there, and get a laptop with a full warranty

you may be right. i was planning on getting an OCZ barebone, they have a 15.4 in gaming laptop that seems pretty cool. the options are between the 8600GT or the 3650 or something like that. i might go back to ATI, simply because that option was cheaper and i'm more familiar with it than nvidias cards.

i guess that might also brings me here. in a way, itd be kind of cool to have an E1705 modded in a way that has never really been done before. now that i have options as to what laptop i'm going to buy next, i guess now this laptop can be my guinea pig. i have everything on it backed up, so i really don't have much to lose. sure, i can sell it and get some nice bank off it, but that lack of creativity doesnt seem to be as satisfying to me...

haha.

the FX1600 is roughly a geforce 8600 which depending on how you look at it is slower than the 7900 in most games but obviously allows for DX10 rendering. although in my opinion the DX10 feature is pretty worthless on a x600 series card and your better off holding onto your 7900.

yeah, i think im just going to buy a new laptop and either hang on to my E1705 or sell it.
i havent decided yet.

im looking into getting an Asus G50VT X5.
but idk yet. it has GREAT specs for the price (around 750 USD) but id like to do more research on it.
its got a great CPU and GPU, but the GPU (9800M GT) may be an integrated card, which really turns me off. but i really haven't been able to confirm this, since no one has really been able to tell me about it.
personally, i think the 9800M GT is a great card, and i would probably buy it even if it were integrated, but something tells me it would be a good idea to invest in a laptop that i could upgrade myself.

itd be ok if the 9800M GT was integrated with a slot still available for a new GPU...
that way i could at least disable the 9800M GT and install a new GPU when the time comes...

does anyone have any insight on this particular model of laptop?
i'm assuming its integrated because apparently the G50VT X6 is, but the one im after is the Asus G50VT X5.
